Itching

I am at day 16 after my surgery and starting experiencing itching around day 12. Today is Sunday and I called my doctor's exchange because Benedryl wasn't cutting it and it was driving me crazy. I had spoken with my dr.'s office on Friday (day 14) and they said it was likely the pain medication; vicodin. So, I quit taking that, but when I still had the crazy itching today I couldn't take it anymore. The on-call dr. suggested 12 hour claritin/zurtec along with the Benydryl. This has helped tremendously.
I can't believe it's the pain med if I was still itching 2 days later. Additionally, I had cut the pain med down to 1 or 2 a day until Thursday (day 13) when my oldest son was in a serious car accident and I spent all day at the hospital with him. Rough - not even a full two weeks after my TAH. I don't want to live on claritin and benedryl so I hope it gets figured out. I saw some older comments on this topic. Anyone recently having the crazy itching?

Re: Itching

I have an itchy rash on my chest. I'm not 100% sure if it is related to my surgery though or not. I started with an all over itchy rash a couple of weeks before my surgery when a dentist prescribed me some amoxicillin. The "new" rash seemed to crop up where they put those sticky things for monitoring heart rate and all that. It took me a week of showers to get the glue off and I kinda think that is what made me itch this time around.... the glue.

Re: Itching

I itched for a WEEK after I stopped the Tylenol 3. It is the pain meds and it needs to work it's way out of your system. SO irritating! Hang in there!

Re: Itching

I am definitely having the crazy itching. I had a reaction to Dilaudid in hospital so was on benadryl for the next 24 hours. Then began itching again so the doc put me on steroids and thought I was reacting to something. It took me several days after being on the medication before the itching stopped. It all depends on how long it takes for your body to clear it. I don't know what is still causing the itching now so am calling my doctor tomorrow to let them figure it out. If you are sensitive to meds, it can take several days to clear it out from your system. I recently saw an allergist to try to find out what I am reacting to. If this continues, you may want to ask your doctor about it just in case you are reacting to something else. I have gotten more sensitive to more things in my environment over the last few months in addition to reactions to pain medicines. Good luck. I hope you feel better,
