Water retention 3 weeks post hysterectomy

Hi.
I had a vaginal hysterectomy 3 weeks past on Tuesday.
Things haven't been great with bowel movement etc. But probably what I expected.
What I didn't expect was today my legs are swollen and tight and I have put on 10 pounds in 4 days!!! I was training and eating well for about a month before my surgery and had lost nearly 2 stone. I'm devastated. Can anyone give me some tips on how to get rid of this. Thanks

Re: Water retention 3 weeks ppst hysterectomy

I suggest you get in contact with your doctor. Drastic weight gain in such a short time period makes me think that something else is going on, especially if your legs have swollen. Please don't panic, but don't ignore it either. Are you peeing normally? Are you staying hydrated and essentially passing the same amount you are taking in? Do you have high blood pressure? Are your legs hot to the touch? Try to get your feet and legs up, like higher than your heart to get some of that fluid to drain away and follow up with your physician. Also, some pain meds can cause a reaction like this. For example, narcotic pain meds make my fingers swell so you could be experiencing a side effect. Sounds like it is worth getting a doc's opinion on. Good luck!

Re: Water retention 3 weeks ppst hysterectomy

Hi, Id suggest the same as Sarrie.. put a call into your Dr is best. Some people can get edema post op or lymphatic system get swelling in extremities. The 1st things that comes to mind, are you urinating sufficient volume? Is you BP high?

Post op constipation is typical, but bring this up to your Dr too since you're calling. Our GI system is different post op & we need to increase fiber & hydrate. Apples, prunes, veggies, nuts, pumpkin seeds, magnasium. I also ate 2 Fiber1 bars w hot tea & follow water... But do contact your Dr 1st. The sooner you get back on track to recovery, the sooner you will feel better. Let us know..

Re: Water retention 3 weeks post hysterectomy

Thank you so much for getting back to me. The doctor has took me off some meds and I'm back to my normal self. Didn't stop peeing for two whole days I have to go back to the hospital on the 20th for a scan as I have history of dvt. I'm also on blood thinning I injections. But I'm so glad to have my legs back to normal. Hope you are all having a great day xxx
