Re: Removal Of The Cervix

I wasn't given a choice. With my history of bad paps, my dr decided it had to come out. A total hysterectomy is uterus and cervix.

Re: Removal Of The Cervix

I have also had clear paps and no family history however my specialist is quite insistent that my cervix goes. I am not too worried about mini periods and I am very concerned about sexual functioning so I would prefer to keep it. My specialist said it is a much more complicated surgery to remove the cervix after a hysterectomy and because surgery is more risky for me I have reluctantly agreed to let it go.

Re: Removal Of The Cervix

Thank you ladies for the information. Because of the fibroids that can grow on the cervix and the fact that I have had horrible PMDD, I am going to trust my Dr. and have it removed.

Thanks snowcoon I was unaware that the cervix removal and PMDD had anything to do with each other.

Thanks CGCorpus this was something that I was worried about.

PMDD can be related to hormones produced by the ovaries, or may also be an issue with chemicals in the brain. But PMDD is not related to the cervix in any way.

Re: Removal Of The Cervix

I am having my cervix removed for a few reasons

1) my cervix and uterus are very sensitive. It just makes sense to remove it

2) I have had abnormal Pap tests

3) when I was 17 I needed to have cells burnt off of my cervix.

Re: Removal Of The Cervix

The reason it should be removed in ladies with PMDD is that you will almost certainly have to take progesterone as part of your HRT in case any endometrial cells remain (to stop proliferation). Many women with PMDD are intolerant to progesterone so adding that back in, in some cases, renders the op pointless. This may not be the case for everyone but is definitely the case with many. So, although PMDD is not technically related to the cervix, it is almost certainly beneficial to have it removed.

Re: Removal Of The Cervix

The one thing that I learned about the PMDD factor is that it does seem to be beneficial to remove the ovaries as well. A OB/GYN explained it to me this way (I was just picking his brain too- he wasn't the one that did my procedure) With PMDD the problem is hormone related. Since the ovaries are what manufactures the hormones it stands to reason that it would be beneficial to remove the factory. I did have my cervix, one remaining ovary and the uterus removed. The PMDD is definately better post op. Definately happy I had this done.

While endometrium can be left with the cervix, the risks are low enough that doctors do not automatically prescribe progesterone as part of HRT for women with a cervix but they may automatically treat the cervix to eliminate those endometrial cells.
