NO Wonder!!

Hey girls.....

I was telling you all how dizzy I have been getting lately.......Well when I went to see my new doctor He wanted my iron checked. So I just got off the phone with the nurse, so Normal is 120-160 I am 120....then the normal for ferriton which stores the iron should be between 12-300 mine is 7......That is the lowest I have ever been!!!!!

So should I be taking iron now? This would explain my dizzy spells right? So a hyster is the right thing for me right?
Maybe this explains the itching as anemia can cause this as well....................

Please give me as much information as you can on this as I think this is really important. How do I get my iron stores up before a hyster?
Thank you Oceanmist

NO Wonder!!

Dear Oceanmist
No one but your doctor can make the decision if it is right for you to have a hyst or not. There may be other treatment options he may recommend. Should you have to have a hyst, you will need to bring your iron up. Over the counter iron supplements (the liquid kind work faster) in combination with orangenjuice (vitamin C increases absorption of iron) should do the trick. There are some simple little things you can do with proper nutrition - legumes are an excellent source of iron. Also cooking in a cast iron skillet will add iron to any food.

Hope that helps

NO Wonder!!

Thanks bladern23, I am looking into getting iron pills here right away. I took an iron pill last week and became dizzy? So I throw them out. I don't know if it was from the iron pill or already having low ferriton of 7. My ferriton last Septemeber was 17 I just talked to the nurse. So it has dropped at lot.

So when do they consider you anemic when your hemaglobin is 120 or less or when your ferriton is 13 or less?.

Did any one have this problem before going into surgery for hyster? I have enough on my plate never mind this now. My specialist hasn't called me yet........

Thanks Oceanmist

NO Wonder!!

Your body needs iron to make hemoglobin <the protein on the red blood cell that carries oxygen ~ so they go together. I think you may be missing a decimal point in your hemoglobin numbers though. The hemoglobin range for a female is around 12.0 to 16.0 (rather than 120-160).

It would be a good idea to write all your questions down for your doctor and get copies of your lab work as well, so you can see the parameters they use, etc.

NO Wonder!!

my level was at 11 and i took over the counter FERROUSSULFATE little tiny green iron supplement for several months....before even deciding on the hyster. My regular dr put me on them....now almost 7wks out my gyn took me off them as my iron is 13.9 and have been told for years by several drs that for a woman levels should be 12-14 (HMM wonder where the 16 comes from?)
i cook ALOT in my cast iron skillet...also if you like beef liver...that is VERY high in iron and dark green leafy veggies....Spinach in your salad is a great way to get extra iron.
Your dr will need to tell you what dosage of iron to take if any...you can also get the b12 shots that work REALLY FAST but i hate needles LOL
WARNING: Iron can constipate you...so make sure to get lots of fiber. and it will turn you BM dark green like the pills LOL(my pills were dark green anyway dont know if they all are)

Good luck. I am hoping that hyster took care of that anemia. You do need to eat right as well though. but the no more bleeding heavy will help alot i am sure.

NO Wonder!!

Hey Peanut,

I haven't had a hyster yet I am scheduled for one in the next couple of months......thats what I'm worried about. My low blood levels and a hyster not sure if I should do it now............................

I have been on iron before but it became toxic so I had to stop. I don't understand it.......one minute I'm low next I'm toxic.........

well Oceanmist i would definately talk with the dr then, sounds like you were getting too much iron.
I didnt word my reply very well, i meant i hoped that my hyster took care of my anemia :-) hoping that the main source of it was the heavy periods i had :0)

I would say that your dr most likely will tell you that they have to get your counts up before they can do the hyster...but it can be brought up fairly quickly if its done correctly...mine came up in about a month.

Good luck

HMM wonder where the 16 comes from?
Here is a link to sites that give the range for a woman as 12 - 16:
http://www.medicinenet.com/hemoglobin/article.htm.

This one shows normal for women as 12.1 - 15.1:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/003645.htm.

This one shows 12 - 18, not specify sex:
http://www.labtestsonline.org/unders...obin/test.html.

So you can see that the low number for the hemoglobin range is generally 12, but the upper number actually flucuates between various resources.

NO Wonder!!

I am calling the nurse in the morning, there closed right now. I want to confirm the blood work. A I think its wrong........I have never been that low, and always had the same heavy peroids for years....so why now would it drop unless something is really something wrong. And B cause like you said where did the 17 come from?

You just can't get good help now adays.....
