Does everyone get a bowel prep?

My doc never mentioned a bowel prep. I just need labs on April 4. He went over everything I believe at my pre op visit on what to expect but never mentioned that. I am having a LAH

Re: Does everyone get a bowel prep?

Im having a TLH in 4/9, I just got my pre op instructions yesterday and the bowel prep listed is NONE. But I have to eat a clear liquid diet the day before surgery.

Re: Does everyone get a bowel prep?

I had TAH. My dr. did not want a bowel prep. It seems to vary with different doctors.

Re: Does everyone get a bowel prep?

I did not need one, so if they say nothing, you are probably off the hook. But you can always ask, if it feels odd.

Re: Does everyone get a bowel prep?

I had a TAH and did not have to do a bowel prep. I would guess it is based on doctor preference.

Re: Does everyone get a bowel prep?

I had my surgery (SAH) on 3/16 and the day before I was reading on here about a bowel prep. My Dr never mentioned it...so off I went to call my best friend who is an OB/GYN...she said it wasn't necessary so I didn't.

When I was entering the OR the resident asked me if I did a bowel prep when I said no...they said something about ok good, sometimes you get dehydrated from it so that's why we asked. Mind you I wasn't listening very much walking toward the OR table but if I remember correctly...it was something like that.

Re: Does everyone get a bowel prep?

My hysterectomy is Friday. I had my pre-op appt with my gyn on Monday and asked her about it. She said that bowel prep is something most docs do not ask their patients to do any more.

I also confirmed that with the hospital today when I went in for my pre-op appt with the anesthesiologist. They said no food after midnight, I can take my synthroid (thyroid medicine)in the morning and I can have 8 oz total of clear liquid over the morning but only up to 2 hours before I go into the hospital. My surgery is at 1:30, so I have until 11:30 to drink my 8 oz of clear liquid. I hope that helps.

Good luck!

Re: Does everyone get a bowel prep?

I asked my doc today and she said that generally docs have people do bowl preps if they have had a lot of abdominal surgeries or if they feel the person will have lots of scar tissue or adhesions. Don't know if that is the same for all doctors.
