Re: Preparing for recovery (robotic laproscopic)
Thanks for the week by week detail. It really helps. I am scheduled for the da Vinci on Ocotober 16 and my doctor has not really talked to me about recovery. She basically said no heavy lifting for 2 weeks. I asked her what "heavy lifting" is and she said nothing over 20 pounds! Ok, well that is 4 bags of sugar and that seems like a lot to me. What she mainly stressed was no sex for 6-8 weeks. She said I can return to work in 2 weeks, no problem. She said its not that big of a deal. She also did not tell me about the liquid diet for 2 days before and that my bowels had to be cleaned out. The nurse did. She acted like the surgery is no big deal.
My main concern is bending over! I have animals to feed. How long is it before you can actually bend over to get a bowl off the floor and put it back down? I have adult kids who can come feed the animals, but I would really like to tell them honestly how long they will be taking care of their mama. Plus, I have a front load washer and dryer. Is that going to be a pain, too?

Re: Preparing for recovery (robotic laproscopic)
My doctor had my hopes all up when she was telling me how I could probably return to work at week 3....then she remembered that she was going the A&P repair also. *sigh* So, that sets me back.
Good Luck ladies! My big day is Wednesday and I'm beginning to get really nervous.

Re: Preparing for recovery (robotic laproscopic)
I managed to feed my cat two days after surgery with no problem. What I wasn't able to do was lift heavy bags of kibble. I found it easier to get down on the floor (kneel down) to do things on the floor, rather than bending -- during the first week or so.
The weight restrictions are usually in place for the 6 to 8 weeks. It's better not to lift anything over 5 to 10 pounds, generally.
Now is the time to get help from your children, husband, relatives, friends and neighbors with anything you need. Overdoing it or lifting too much could cause serious damage, set you back in your recovery and possibly mean you need another surgery.
Remember: You only have one chance to heal right.

If you want to be sure, plan on 6 weeks. If it's less, it's a plus! I had Davinci almost 4 years ago. Went home the same day and took the full 6 weeks off only because I had some bleeding because I was doing too much at home. Follow your doctor's instructions!!

Re: Preparing for recovery (robotic laproscopic)
Today is Sunday, my surgery was Wednesday at 7:30am. Other than a little soreness I am fine. My tummy did swell and that was my biggest surprise, it's almost normal now. Some cramps the first 2 days and general uncomfortable ness but I am shocked how well I feel. There is no way I can do nothing for 6 weeks, I would be nuts! Went and had coffee yesterday with a friend for 2 hours yesterday, no problem.
Everyone's recovery will be different but a huge factor is your mind. If you tell yourself it's awful and miserable, it probably will be. If you tell yourself "I just had surgery and I will be okay, just gotta get throu the first few days" you will.
The power of positive thinking is huge!
Good luck, you will be okay!
