stool softeners

I've been taking 2 stool softeners a day and eating about 20 gms of fiber per day. For the last couple of days I've been constipated. How many stool softeners is it safe to take in one day?

my dr said two a day but he said it was okay to up my fiber a lil bit ..

Snack on Clif Bars, tons of fiber and they're organic too.

I had the same problem....so I am taking pills that are a stool softener plus a stimulant laxative, they work pretty good. I did take jsu ttoe stool softens and they didnt help at all...then I tool exlax and oh that work toooo much. so I swtiched to the combo one like i said earlier and seems to work better....but I do still get bad gas pains...those realllllllly hurt.

as long as it's only a softener, such as docusate, not mixed with any laxitives, you can take up to 8 per day. I would increase by 2 at a time.

Also remember to drink plenty of water, that will help tremendously!

psyllium (sp?) husk works well too...natural and very gentle on your system. i found that the stool softeners just didn't do the trick and i became VERY constipated. It was a horrible ordeal.
take 1 tsp with 8 oz of water or juice (very important to drink it with lots of water) 1/2 hour before breakfast and 1/2 before bed.
You'll be up and "moving" in no time.

P.S. yes, make sure you drink lots and lots of water
2 litres if you can. it sounds like a lot but soon you'll actually WANT the water.

I was told by a colleague ( a physiotherapist who is a womens health specialist ) to eat 3 pears a day. This helped me greatly. Good luck, it is miserable, but please know it does get better eventualy although it won't feel like it at the moment.
Please don't whatever you do, strain to go to the toilet. I got a prolapse post op because that's what I did. Pears helped and of course they are natural.
