Upcoming hysterectomy 9/24: what did you need for pain meds post-op?
I was given prescriptions for Oxycodone, prescription strength naproxen and prescription strength acetaminophen. The Oxycodone made me throw up, so I stopped that on day 3, and stuck with the other 2. By day 6, I recognized that I no longer needed them. However, recovery is an individual thing, and you might need to take the Motrin for longer. Just listen to your body, and you should be okay. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery!

Re: Prescriptions
I had abdominal surgery and was in the hospital for three days afterwards. While there I was given Dilaudid. However, the catheter delivering the Dilaudid was removed first thing in the morning on the third day. By that afternoon I wasn't experiencing any pain, so I was released without prescriptions. I was told to take OTC ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (paracetamol, Tylenol) as necessary.
I took ibuprofren pretty regularly the first week, occasionally the second week.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 9/24: what did you need for pain meds post-op?
I had RaVH and was in hospital overnight and was given various narcotic pain meds on a regular schedule. After I was home I took oxycodone for two doses (I had a long car ride), and then I took prescription strength (800 mg) ibuprofen every 6 hours for the first 2 weeks and then dropped down to 600 mg the 3rd week. The ibuprofen was sufficient for pain which was minimal, mostly I took it for it's antiinflammatory properties. Because Ilive alone iI kept a written log of meds and temperatures to keep track.

I was given tylenol and toradol (kind of like motrin) in my iv right after surgery. Once they removed the iv later that night, I didn't need anything for pain, I really had none. My dr wrote me a script for Tylenol with codeine, but I never filled it. I did take motrin a couple of times mainly to help me sleep better.

I was given codeine to take home, but I only used 3 of them. Only really had any pain to speak of for 2 days. If you are used to heavy, painful periods, the pain after surgery seems not so bad, and at least you know it isn't going to come back every few weeks, even if you don't exactly know how long it will last! i did have discomfort for a couple of weeks or so, and of course pain thresholds and pain levels vary from person to person, but for me it was really surprisingly minimal. i am 8 weeks post now, and feeling human again

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 9/24: what did you need for pain meds post-op?
I woke up with alot of cramping. Originally, my doc was going to give me iv toradol. That got changed to a morphine pca pump which got taken down the next morning. He gave me scripts for percocet and toradol. I used them on and off for about a week. I had a TVH/BSO. There was alot of work to seperate my uterus from my colon due to scar tissue. Everyone's different. It depends on pain tolerance and type of surgery done.
