My Pre-Op Assessment

Today I had my pre-op assessment at the hospital. It wasn't as thorough as it explained in the pre-op Assessment the pamphelet, and I didn't get all my questions answered and didn't feel I had the opportunity as I was told they weren't the one to answer. Due to my age and good health, I didn't need the EKG. Just blood work, blood pressure and stuff like that. All in all, with all my researching so much on my own I am confident that it is all routine and it's just a process for them. I thought I was seeing 3 people (nursing staff, pharmacist amd anesthesiologist). I was so disappointed I didn't get the chance to speak to the anesthesiologist and was told I have the option of how I would like to be put to sleep by General anesthesia or by an epidural. I most likely go with anesthesia but would like to hear what they do. It's fascinating to me. They did try to see if he/she had time but they had left for lunch. Well there's always the day of the surgery.

One shock I found out was that I will be in the hospital for 3 days since my op is first one on Monday I will be out Thursday morning that's 3 whole days and 3 nights. Discharged at 9 am Thurs. They don't count the day of the operation. That's standard for an abdominal hysterectomy though the specialist has always said 2 days. I'm hoping I will be able to convince them I'm good and released in 2 days. Wishful thinking I guess.

We are counting down the days ...it's T-minus 13 days and counting. A week and a half. Can you tell I'm excited to have this done and feeling better. Oh ya!

My Pre-Op Assessment

Thanks Lourdes44 hugs and my prayers to you! I may be a mess too but I try not to worry about things I can't control. I know it's hard not to think of it but try not to stress too much. I think, it is what it is and so many women go through this and get through it. Yes I will be in pain but they can manage the pain. Communicate to the doctor or in the preop document any concerns and they can work you through it.

By the way, bring all meds and topical meds, vitamins and herbal supplements as they do advise you on them and record them. They are thorough.

Usually, I try not to stress till I have to. I put things out of my head till I have to face them. And I am worried about how much pain I will be in and other things but you at least we have time to prepare.

I bought so many things at the store for just in case...like Gasx but was told yesterday I won't need it. But that's not what I'm hearing from ever women on this site. I know everyone is different but I will bring it anyway. I'm stressing a bit how long I will be in the hospital but maybe that will change since I stressed to them I have my sister taking care of me at home for as long as I need her.

Also, if you don't want to wait that long you can do what I dI'd and get put on a cancellation list. I didn't realize people do cancel. You may be surprised and all you can do is ask.

Thanks for your message sista!

My surgery is scheduled for January 19th and I just had the Cystoscopy last week as well as the Urodynamics study. I was very nervous but have to tell you that the Cystoscopy was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. They used a numbing agent so there was little discomfort. There's a quick pinch when they go into the bladder but that's really it for pain. Plus, it's super quick. I took Tylenol after and that was really sufficient. Good luck!

Hysterectomy Date moved up 1 week

UPDATE... I got a call from my doctors office asking if I would be willing to have my surgery 1 week earlier.... I was shocked and it took a moment to think. I asked if I could think about it and if I said no could I keep my regular op date. She said of course. I was wondering why I was being pushed up. She didn't really say though alluded to an open spot. They want to fill. If I said no they'd go to the next person. I spoke to my boss who was very accommodating. I already had everything in place anyway so why not. The only glitch would be not having my sister care for me the first week as her family had scheduled to go to Florida. I rationalized that since I would be in the hospital the 3-1/2 days I would be fine. When I called her up she was shocked and said thats fine and she'd still be there for me. I reminded her of her trip and she said don't worry I don't have to go then and could go in 3 weeks. Wow I couldn't believe she'd do that for me. I am truly blessed to have someone care for me while my DH is at work.

A funny thing happened as I was in an employees office making the call to confirm the date. I was on hold and rested my elbows on the desk and dazed past to the door. Then after a moment I focused my eyes and noticed I was starring at a large badge hanging on a lanyard on the door handle. It read "Danger...Do Not Operate". I had never seen that before. It took me back a moment then I dismissed it as a funny thing. Good thing I'm not superstitious at all. Lol

I am now confirmed to have my abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingy. Meaning i will keep my ovaries but she will remove the 2 cysts on them.

I haven't been worried about the operation but now it's getting more real and I find myself getting nervous.

Bad night

I had a really bad night's sleep last night. My sister came over and we made chicken pot pies to freeze for my recovery starting next week. We had had one with caesar salad. It was so yummy. I went to bed at 930 pm and it was hard to empty my bladder. I have had increased pressure. All night I tried to pee but not much each time. I gave up and slept through till 430 am this morning when I got up I felt my abdomen and the fibroid feels even more solid as a rock. My DH felt fine so it can't be what we ate. I feel like I'm gaining weight though trying to be careful of my diet. I'm drinking protein shakes for breakfast and lunch. They are vegan not whey. They help with the calories.

Today is my last day at work before the op on Monday and I feel like I can't go in to work but I will.

Anyone else having similar experience? it's pretty intense.

Re: Hysterectomy 1/18 - any thoughts would be welcomed

Just to be safe call the surgeons office and ask to have urine tested for uti. I'm sure it's your nerves, when I was anxious pre fibroid I'd have to pee every 1.5-2 hours. I don't know if you still get your period but before mine would come my fibroid felt harder and belly bigger, maybe you are due soon? I'm not going to sugar coat it, you will start to feel really anxious now that it's fast approaching, I was calm and prepared like you then the day before I was a wreck. It's normal just let your sis and husband reassure you it will be ok don't hold in your fears talk them thru with a clear minded person to calm you down. Once I was in preop area I was much calmer. You are going to do great, your recovery will be smooth. Keep thoughts positive as much as possible it helps calm the nerves. Good luck, write on this thread with your update so we know how you're doing.

Re: Hysterectomy 1/18 - any thoughts would be welcomed

Hi!!

I had surgery Dec. 16, 2015.

I walk around for months in pain. I took over the counter pain meds and when I reach my boiling point I pick up the phone and call my GYN. I had to wait a month to see her very busy person. When I saw her, the new I was given was not the shock of my life. I knew I need to remove my girly parts but I want to hold on to them. But the pain says a different thing. I had have endometriosis and Fibroids. I am 4 week out the pain and knot in my side is gone. Yea!!
