Upcoming September hysterectomy: Removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix
Hello all,
I am 37, single, 4 children from C-sections, tubes tied since 2008 and I need open and honest answers!
I have a surgery date of 9/5 (day before my birthday), and now I am considering backing out! Originally I requested a partial hysterectomy to take care of the super heavy bleeding the first 3 to 4 days of my cycle due to fibroids. Then the Dr said we take the fallopian tubes too. I said ok cool. Now I am told the cervix. Well now I am considering canceling the entire procedure!! I understand the risk of cancer and I have only had one abnormal pap back in 2002, but I think I need my cervix for some type of sexual gratification! I could be wrong but I think I need it!
Can anyone tell me from personal experience how has their sex life changed since losing everything but the ovaries? I mean I am ok with losing everything BUT my ovaries and cervix!

Re: Removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix
if you aren't comfortable having your cervix removed, let your dr know. if he doesnt offer you another type of hysterectomy that will allow you to keep your cervix, you can get another opinion. i had an LSH...kept my cervix and ovaries and am very happy that i did. the dr. i originally went to wasn't trained to do that procedure. good luck!

Upcoming September hysterectomy: Removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix
Papoose79, to HysterSisters, and greetings from a fellow fibroid sister!
My surgeon had originally planned to do an LAVH, citing the risks of future cervical fibroids, among other things. However, I was concerned that my small, virgin vagina might not accommodate that approach, plus I didn't like the idea of having my cervix removed, and my research indicated that I'd be better off keeping it. We discussed it at our next appointment, and settled on LSH, which turned out quite well. My surgery and recovery were relatively uncomplicated, and now, more than 2 years later, I still haven't had any cervical fibroids or other problems. I would recommend doing your own research - we have an excellent article that can help - and speaking to your surgeon, or perhaps seeking a second opinion, to make sure you're making the best decision for your individual situation. We'll be with you whatever you decide!

Hi Papoose79 - to HysterSisters!
I am glad you found this site.
If you have a choice, whether or not to keep your cervix can be a personal decision. Here are articles that may provide information to help you decide:
10 Questions to Help You Decide about the Cervix
Hysterectomy, Cervix, and Intimacy
Hysterectomy, Cervix, and Pelvic Organ Support
I lost everything - uterus, cervix, tubes, and ovaries - no choice for me. I have had no issues with my pelvic floor. Sex is different for everyone after surgery. Some say it is better, some say it is worse, and everywhere in between. For me, sex feels different. My orgasms are not as intense - I miss the muscle contraction of my uterus. But they are more frequent - so go figure. We also have to use lubricant, not uncommon if you lose your ovaries, and that frustrates me.
Discuss your concerns with your doctor, and do your research. Then make the right decision for you. We will support you.

Re: Upcoming September hysterectomy: Removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix
With the heavy bleeding you are having, you could still have monthly cervical bleeding, especially if there is any endo or adeno present...."scholarly" articles all say there is absolutely no difference sexually from keeping or leaving your cervix. Women who've gone through it report both outcomes. (No change or yes to a change). As far as contractions go, it's your uterus that actually contracts, so the only benefit I could imagine with the cervix is if you enjoy your cervix being bumped or contacted, I did not enjoy that, so it was never even a consideration for me. I'm also glad I didn't leave it because pathology turned out that I had a chronically inflamed cervix...likely the cause of my chronic pain that we were doing the hyst for. However, it's entirely personal and I would encourage a second or even a third opinion before you say for sure. If your surgeon doesn't do the supracervical, you may have to change doctors to get what you want. It also can be based on the size of your uterus. Good Luck!

Re: Upcoming September hysterectomy: Removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix
Thanks for all your replies! I have read several scholarly articles, but in my opinion nothing trumps personal experience! My idea is I would like to keep my cervix no matter what, unless they say it has cancer, then there would be no choice for me! My theory is, I can always have it removed, but I can never put it back! I would like to preserve as much of my reproductive organs as possible!!

Upcoming September hysterectomy: Removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix
I insisted upon keeping my cervix, both for sexual function and for future pelvic floor health. I was unaware of the potential for mini-periods post-op (surgeon didn't inform me of that risk), and I do have 3 days of very light spotting with my period each month. Orgasms are very comparable to pre-op and sex is getting better as I heal. And I have the comfort of my pelvic floor being much more intact with the procedure I chose. I opted for an abdominal approach as I had concerns about vaginal trauma (I already had some vestibulodynia pre-op).
Hope this helps!!

Re: Upcoming September hysterectomy: Removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix
mnw1106,
Thank you! My surgeon is on vacation and I haven't had the opportunity to meet with her since she gave me the first surgery date, which I backed out of. I told them before, I understand that I have had a previous abnormal pap, but I have not had one in the last 10 to 12 years, and every year I demand a Pap regardless of the 3 yr recommendation and not once I have I been told there is cancer. Matter of fact it is me that have to argue the previous abnormal and cancer prevention check and still nothing out of the norm!
I am ok with mini periods as long as I will not continue to be anemic. I am goi-ng to insist on keeping my cervix, and will only approve it's removal if medically necessary. I am also opting for an abdominal surgery, because to be honest, I think I will end up with one anyway considering this will be surgery number 6 (3 bikini cut C sections, 1 old school C section, gastric bypass).
I do understand the cancer risks, but would rather keep it now and will cross that bridge when I get there unless they tell me today it has moved to some stage of cancer.
Thank you everyone!
