Hysterectomy and Bypass Surgery

My sister who is seriously considering bypass surgery has been told that she could do a hysterectomy at the same time -- for prolapse and a vaginal wall problem. Has anyone had both these procedures done at the same time? She is young (42), diabetic and only about 70 pounds overweight. I can only imagine what the recovering time would be. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your time. I am very worried about her and surprised that someone would suggest doing both at the same time!

That sound like a lot to put her through all at once. I would be worried too.

Hysterectomy and Bypass Surgery

Are you referring to gastric bypass surgery? If so, is there a possibility that a substantial weight loss could alleviate her prolapse symptoms?

Would she be considering a hyst if she was not going for bypass surgery?

Hysterectomy and Bypass Surgery

Yes, gastric bypass surgery and yes, she needs to get a hysterectomy. I asked her the same question and she said that bypass will not relieve her situation, which I believe especially since she really isn't obese (if she could loose even 50 pounds her diabetic health will improve) but being less heavy would help with hysterecomy recovery (or so her doctor said). The only reason she can get the bypass surgery is because of the diabetes -- she is on medication and doesn't take insulin shots. She is quite fit -- even did a triathalon 2 weeks ago. I cannot imagine what the recovery time would be for both surgeries.

Hysterectomy and Bypass Surgery

Hi. Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but I always thought gastric bypass surgery was reserved for people who were seriously overweight, like well over 100 lbs. Is she a candidate at that weight?

I do think both surgeries at once would be a lot to recover from.

Being diabetic makes her qualified. I would have thought she wasn't big enough either but for some reason her doctors think that she will never loose weight unless she has the surgery.

Boy, does this sound crazy! Obviously she is not typical but is it worth the risk? I personally think she should take care of her immediate health problem and have the hyst. I love her dearly and just want to be able to support her with any info I can.

Thanks!
