Prism like flashing lights in eyes 11 days post op

This morning after I had my coffee my eyes started acting strange. I could see a half circle of shimmering prism like lights in my right eye, and when I closed my eye it was like lightening in my eyes. It's calmed down now after about half an hour, but has anyone every had this post op? Could it be the medications or something? It's got me worried, I never had this before.

It sound like you had an aura. Auras are often the pre-cursors to migraines. I am unusual as I get the aura without the migraine or the migraine without the aura. It usually goes away in an hour or less. It is best if you mentioned it to your doctor because it could be something else. Your doctor will be able to let you know what it is really since I am not a doctor and that was my best guess.

Re: Prism like flashing lights in eyes 11 days post op

that sounds like a classic migrane with aura. I've had them since I was 18 years old. usually are followed by severe headache, neckache and nausea, also sensitivity to light. I have perscribtion medication for it but usually an asperin and a drink of caffene helps. (please make sure you check with your doctor before taking any meds, especially since you are still so recently post op and taking meds.
my migranes subsided after my laproscopy and D&C last April, but I got one a few days after the procedure and another one a few days after my hysterectomy. It's probably a combo of all the hormones getting adjusted and the meds. if it happens again call your doc to ask what you can take. but thats what it sounds like to me.

Re: Prism like flashing lights in eyes 11 days post op

Thanks! I wondered if it could be from the Ambien too, or all the crying jags I've had. I did have a bit of a headache, neckache after it. My eyes are sore too. I will definately mention it to my doctor, I go Tuesday. I've never had a migraine in my life, but my body has gone through a lot lately. That was very stressful.

Kacey2011 ~ Sounds like the auras I get when I get a migraine. Before my surgery, I would get the auras with a migraine headache and it would usually take a few doses of Tylenol to get rid of it. Since my surgery, I've only gotten the aura, with no migraine, and it goes away with one dose of Tylenol and within about an hour.

Danni ~ How often do you get your's?? It bothered me at first, after my surgery, that I was still having migraines. But then quickly noticed it was just the aura and gone within an hour. No complaints here!! I'm relieved to know what I'm experiencing is not unique. Whew!! I usually get one every two weeks or so. I did have an increase in them, just before getting my estrogen level tested. Ends up, my estrogen level was too high and my gyn lowered my bi-est in half and I went back to having them about every two weeks.

Re: Prism like flashing lights in eyes 11 days post op

I don't get auras that often, maybe 2 or 3 a year. No idea what causes them unlike my migraines. The migraines are atmospheric and stress related. The only thing I can do with migraines is get into bed and sleep. Only once have I woken up and the migraine was still there the next morning. Some years for me are better then others so I really can't say how often I get them. If I had to guess, on a bad year, I get half a dozen and on a good year, maybe a couple.

Re: Prism like flashing lights in eyes 11 days post op

Three things came to mind.
  • reaction to a drug or combination of drugs that you are taking
  • detaching retina
  • migraine: I used to have flashing lights but never associated with a headache. I was worried about a detached retina, but my ophthalmologist explained that it was ancephalgic migraine. It apparently isn't all that unusual during perimenopause.

Re: Prism like flashing lights in eyes 11 days post op

I'm 19 days post op (lavh bso)with the flashing, wiggling lights in my eyes,(both) almost daily!
It seems to be happening to me more when I go from darker room, to light, sunlight makes it go crazy. I'm not taking any meds so it can't be that, but before surgery I had migraines... especially around my cycle.
So as long as the auras come without headaches I'm ok with it.
It was alot right after surgery, seems to have diminished a little this weekend

Re: Prism like flashing lights in eyes 11 days post op

Agreeing that they sound like the aura's that can come with migraines. My doc called the "ocular" migraines. In my case they are not always followed by an actual headache migraine.

When I started having them several years ago my doc did an MRI just to be sure that there was nothing going on that was odd...the results were normal and she decided they were just migraines.

Sometimes mine are followed by a bad headache, sometimes not.
