pre op jitters
Hi, I'm totally new here, am having a vaginal hysterectomy on May 31. I'm very nervous, and I don't feel well informed. That's why I came here. My ovaries are staying in, but I understand I may still go through menopause. Any help out there??

if youre ovaries are staying and continue to work after surgery you wont go into menopause....sometimes after surgery the ovaries will shut down for a while which in turn will cause menopausal type symptoms.

Hello - I had a vag hyst 13 may and I was PETRIFIED not just nervous! (Brisbane Australia)
The good news - it was a lot better than I thought it would be - if they do to u what they did to me, u'll have a pack (bandage tightly wound into the vag which they leave there for 24 hrs, which feels very uncomfortable (it puts pressure on everything 'down there' - plus a cathatar, which is absolutely nothing to worry about, u just feel like u need to do a wee all the time and it doesn't hurt when they take either of those out, promise. I was petrified of having a cathatar.
You may have a drip in your arm for saline and pain killers for the first 24 hrs. I bled too much during the op so I had to lay on my back for 48 hrs and have the pack, cathatar and drip for 48 hrs, which nearly drove me nuts from boredom!. I couldn't lay on my sides cause it hurt, still does actually.
One thing to remember - take pain killer BEFORE the pain comes - that's what my anesthatist said - and of course, I had to wait til I was in pain THEN ask for painkillers, big mistake! I found pathadien (given in the drip) didn't work as well as the tablets 1 tramal and 2 panadol. If u feel pain, ask for pain killers and keep taking as they'll give u : ) U stay on painkillers for quite a while, ahhh I love taking them, hardly any pain!
Vag hyst are ALOT better than abdominal they keep telling me. Yep I kept my ovaries and feel great - we will go thru menopause eventually I guess but that pesty pain and blood loss is over, phew - Huuuuuugs I pray u have an easy time and a quick recovery.

thank you so much
thank you so much and big hugs to you all. I had my pre-admission appointment today, and feel much better. I'm becoming more informed and all your info helped greatly. I am now looking forward to a positive recovery, and to saying bye-bye to all the pain, long periods, and ect..from adenomyosis. Any other info is greatly appreciated. Smiles to you all from Victoria Canada
