so many questions about hysterecctomy
I had a myomectomy in 2007 for a fibroid and it took care of the problem for about two years. I now have a new fibroid and I, too, am confused on whether to get another myomectomy or not. I'm 39, have never had kids, don't think I want any now, don't want anything or anyone to decide for me either. I hate to think that getting a hysterectomy makes it so final.
I have so many questions on hysterectomy! Does that mean I'll no longer get pregnant? No more birth control pill? if I keep my ovaries, is it true that they shrink in 3 years and I'll go into menopause? Will all of my bloating go away? I really need someone to answer these for me. I don't know where to look in the forum.

Re: LSH v. Myomectomy
sistercel820, i'll tell you what i believe are the answers to your questions, but PLEASE PLEASE ask your doctor to be 100% sure;
no period, no pregnancy, no birth control needed. yes i have heard that about ovaries and menopause but it's different for different people; i know of people who kept ovaries and went into instant menopause, and others who 10 years later are just hitting menopause in their early 50s.
i had abdominal myomectomy two weeks ago; didn't want hyster yet either because i really didn't want to make a final decision on children; i plan on using a naturopath and acupuncture to increase my odds that they don't come back.
if you only have one fibroid, hopefully it's relatively small and the acupuncture will do the trick!

Re: so many questions about hysterecctomy
make sure you don't want to have kids before you make your decision. once the hysterectomy is performed there is no going back.

Re: so many questions about hysterecctomy
You could have a possible surrogate carry your baby after a hysterectomy if you keep your ovaries but no uterus, no pregnancy.

Re: so many questions about hysterecctomy
Yes, I agree about thinking it thoroughly with wanting children or not, but I don't have that LONGING like my friends do. They cry themselves to sleep because they have no one in their lives so therefore no kids. They're dying to be mothers! Not me. I had lots of kids growing up around me - nieces and nephews. I don't hate kids, but I am almost 40 and really don't THINK I want that anymore. I think I'll take my time to figure this one out. I've been placed on Seasonique for now so we'll see. Thanks girls!!

Re: so many questions about hysterecctomy
Hi Sistercel820,
I am several years post-op (2004) from my hyst and I am still pleased with the results. I kept my ovaries and I have not gone into menopause yet. My ovaries are still working fine. In my case, not having periods and not having to use b.c. has been a good thing. Also, my hyst gave me back my quality of life. Instead of living with heavy periods, 24/7 pelvic pressure, bladder incontinence and no energy...I now live a healthy lifestyle.
A hyst is major surgery...so in the end...just do what is best for you. That is what is most important.

Re: so many questions about hysterecctomy
Thanks for your e-mail! It's good to hear some good news and I also noticed that you had the non-invasive type of surgery. Did it take you long to recover? Well, I went to see my acupuncturist and after five visits, it appears that the bleeding has subsided. Hmmm, I wonder if it's also the new Seasonique pill that's kicked in, too, but for now I guess I will deal with the lack of energy and labido if I can save myself from surgery. I wonder if there's something topical I can use for my libido, though, because I know that the pill is doing this to me on top of my fibroid. I'm just taking it a day at a time. I am so happy to hear that you're doing well. It gives me hope for when I cross that road, or if I ever have to. Thanks again!!
