2 weeks post hysterectomy: Exhausted
I had total hysterectomy on 5/2. I talked to the surgeon prior about HRT. He said we would discuss it during follow up. After day 3 came the night sweats, bed drenching night sweats. I went back 10 days post op and was told that they didn't do HRT with women over 50. I figured it can't last forever. Today was day 14 and I went back to my desk job. I made it to 2:30, exhausted is an understatement.

Re: Exhausted
First, being exhausted when you are only 2 weeks post-op is completely normal, HRT or not. I could not have worked at 2 weeks post op. I was still napping on and off all day and was swollen. As for HRT over 50, there are plenty of doctors who prescribe HRT for women 50+. My gyn has patients in their 70s for whom she prescribes low-dose HRT. I think you need a second opinion on the HRT front, especially since you are symptomatic. Surgical menopause and natural menopause are very different things. With natural menopause the ovaries continue to trickle small amounts of hormones the body needs to keep it healthy. This last for years. We have had many sisters who have been through natural menopause come to complain that they experience menopause all over again with surgical menopause. Surgical menopause is abrupt and takes longer to adjust to, I'm told. I had my hyst/BSO when I was 45. I am now 49, and I have been on HRT since 10 days post-op. My doc has no plans to cut me off on my next birthday. Consider a new doctor, even if just for hormones. And try to rest as much as possible. If you can, take more time off work. If you can't, try to work half-days, try to find ways to keep from bending lifting, etc. Take care of you. Remember, you only get one chance to heal right the first time.

Re: Exhausted
Thank you so much, I expected the pain, not the exhaustion. Good Lord I was falling asleep at my desk!

Re: Exhausted
If I had gone to work at two weeks, I would have been sleeping at my desk too!

Re: Exhausted
Low-dose SSRIs can often be used to treat hot flashes and night sweats. Ask your doctor about them if the night sweats continue to be a problem.

Thank you, I plan to give it a week or two. Get into bed freezing and wake up sweating.

Re: Exhausted
Wow! I could barely make it 4 hours a day when I started back at work part-time after 3 weeks. I laid down and napped as soon as I got home. It does get better. I'm pretty much back full-time now with a little swelly belly and still resting after I get back from work.

Re: Exhausted
Yeah, I don't think this return to work thing at two weeks was the best idea. By the time I get the 5th grader on the bus at 6:50 to showering and driving a half hour by 9:30, I am wiped out.
