Estrogen Dominance
Hello ! I am 33yrs. old and scheduled for total hysterectomy on April 7, 2003. I'm having the hysterectomy due to precancerous uterine hyperplasia caused by estrogen dominance. I have been unsuccessful in controlling or balancing out my excessive estrogen w/Progestrone, so my doctors believes this is the best and safest step to take. For years I have suffered from the effects of estrogen dominance...ie depression, mood swings, food cravings, weight gain, heavy bleeding and lethary. I almost feel that the amount of estrogen in my body have become toxic to me. My gyn. has left the choice of me keeping my ovaries up to me. If she finds precancer while doing the operation, she will take them. My "huge" dilemma is whether or not to keep my ovaries?? I understand that my ovaries are the source of my estrogen. I worry that if I keep them I may develop precancer some other place in my body, like my breasts. However, getting rid of them creates other concerns that we're all familiar with like bone loss, heart disease and loss of sex drive etc....I'm so afraid that if I only have my Uterus taken out and keep my ovaries, I will still have these really bad dibilitating symptoms. I just want to feel healthy again. Any advice???

estrogen dominance
Hi, I wanted to let you know what my 2 doctors said
about the ovaries. My gyn left it up to me, I told him
that if he saw a problem to take them. My endocrinologist,
I asked his opinion, he said save yourself a trip to the OR
in 10 years, do it all at once. My mother had me freaked
out about the ovaries, she had me scared I would lose
my mind without the ovaries. Anyway, when my gyn got
in there, my ovaries were plastered to the walls of my
uterus by scar tissue. So i dont know how good they
were working. He took them out. Surgical menopause
was not easy, but I'm finally starting to feel better.
9 mos later I can say I'm glad I had the surgery. My
last period was 80+ days, and the ovary pain was
terrible each month. It's all gone now, praise GOD.
Good luck to you...sharon

Estrogen Dominance
Hi there,
interesting question. I think you really need to ask your doctor's opinion on this. I don't know that the hormonal imbalance you have now would necessarily continue even if you keep your ovaries. And I guess, basically, given your young age, I would be inclined to keep them if they look OK to the surgeon. You might need to have them removed eventually, maybe, or they might not function as well, but without them, you are facing a much longer time on hormone therapy and that carries its own concerns and dangers.
just my opinion!

To keep or not to keep
Hello, you situation sounds very familiar. I am 35 years old. Your symptoms sound a lot like mine. I just had my pre-op visit with my doctor today. I decided not to keep my ovaries due to the fact that my periods come every 3 weeks, and I have severe PMS at least one full week before my period starts. I think I will have a better quality of life without the tremendous hormonal mood swings. I know it could take some time to find the right dosage of HRT, but I look forward to feeling like a normal person.
