I had no other pain other than around "that time".
I, too had TAH because of heavy, prolonged periods and a 5 month size uterus.

Christie,

Why is your doc concerned about the mass? Is it a cyst or is it solid? If it is a cyst it can be watched and see if it resolves. If the doc is concerned about the mass, is he concerned that it is ovarian cancer? If so, he should draw a CA-125 and refer you to a gyn oncologist for the surgery.

It is important to know exactly why one is having a hyst and what your alternative treatments are.

I have no pain but I can certainly feel my fibroids, my very enlarged uterous and I am not loosing any weight from the hourly treks to the bathroom! My periods are regular and not at all heavy and I have no back or pelvic pain like some other women. I'm 34 yrs old and never planned on having children so I don't dwell on that. After the gyno's diagnosis and exam and having two sonograms I was pretty convinced, that for me, a TAH is the right choice. BUT that is my decision in the face of overwhelming, hard evidence.
You have the right to a second, third, or fourth opinion. You also have the right to research and find out more information for yourself. Looking through the boards here is a good start. Good luck.

No pain here, either. Simply went in for my yearly physical and all the wheels fell off.

Cysts on both ovaries, polyp on cervix, uterine lining thickened to 1.5 cm, elevated CA-125. Since I had stage IV endo many years ago (again, with no pain), Doc says it's time for the Big H.

It's still pretty weird, isn't it, that we can have all this stuff going on inside and feel perfectly fine.

no pain

why dont you first of all def. seek another opinion, and second ask if maybe they can just remove the ovary or the mass. i would surely have that taken care of, but seek furthur advise from others docs as to why you need to have everything remove. i am a nurse and firmly believe in second ,third and fourth opinions. It is your right as a pt. and as a human being. It is your body, and if you have reservations about what he is telling you please seek alternate routes first. i was told at 26 I needed a radical hyst. and no chance of children. didnt listen, had three more opinions and ended up with just the removal of fibroids. i also had 2 beautiful sons who are 1 and 3 and i'm 41. follow your gut instinct. we as women have a powerful gut reactions follow them, i did and it all turned out great. i did end up with a hyst in jan but it was for adeno and enlarged uterus. god bless and good luck, baily

I really do not understand why a mass on the ovary means you need a full hysterectomy -- he hasn't even said what the mass is??

I would ABSOLUTELY get another opinion and find out exactly what the mass is before agreeing to any surgery.... if the dr feels the mass is cancerous - heaven forfend - then he should at least have done some tests to find out before suggesting a hyst.

please get more information before having surgery!!!

wishing you well,

You need it because of what might happen later on. I just had a baseball sized fibroid removed that was attached to my uterus. I also was having virtually no pain, basically no symptoms and wondered why I needed this. But after reading and thinking I realized that it was to protect my future and not have to go through something possible worse. It ended up that my ovaries were ok but I had everything removed. I am 54 and wanted to eliminate future problems. My surgery was on the 10th of March and I came home on the 11th. My hope would be that everyone's surgery would go as smoothly as mine. Please let me add, most definitely get a second opinion. I got 3 opinions, did research and read a bunch on these boards. So, yes, get a second opinion.
