Re: Bladder spasms versus infection
I'm glad I found this thread. My bladder is unhappy and spasms a lot. I don't think being cathertized for 10 days post op helped. Now I feel a constant sensation of having a bladder, urgent need to go when I know there isn't much in there and sometimes a semi-burning sensation in the urethra itself. Hurts to start to pee, but then it backs off. No fever though. If it persists through today I'll call the doc Monday and see she suggests. This truly sucks.

Re: Bladder spasms versus infection
I had exactly the same procedure done as you on 26th August and for the first 14 days I experienced awful bladder spasms. It felt like someone was squeazing the last dregs of my bladder out. I am now into my 21st day and my bladder is improving but it seems to roll up when I am finishing. I am sure it will remedy itself week by week. I dont have a urine infection so it must be just a symptom of the surgery. I long for the day that my body feels normal again. Since my op I dont have full bladder syndrome but I make sure I empty it every hour or so so that it isnt too full. The thing is without sites like this we would be lost as my consultant didnt warn me about any of the after effects of my surgery.

Re: Bladder spasms versus infection
I've had this problem as well. I pee just fine but toward the end, with the final amount, it hurts. Personally, I found what helps me, is to have a full-ish bladder when I go. And when I start, don't stop and let it all come out in a constant stream. It doesn't make the pain go away completely, but it seems to help. Sometimes I also put my hand low on my pelvis, where I think my bladder is, and press down gently. This may all be my imagination, but I feel like it helps me to hurt a bit less. Since there are quite a few of us experiencing it, it makes me think it's pretty normal.
Happy recovery to all!

Re: Bladder spasms versus infection
Oh my! It was one of the worst parts of recovery!
My spasms started a few days after surgery and grew in intensity but by my 8 week check-up they were better to the point I forgot to bring the subject up. I am now 14 weeks post-op and they are sporadic and while sometimes uncomfortable usually very mild. Two things I tried...I drink cranberry juice (watered down a bit!) to make sure I didn't get an infection. I don't know if there is any science behind it but my grandmother swore by it and claimed she never got another UTI after she started drinking it every morning and lived to be 94. Second...at my 2 week visit the doc said that a sitz bath would help calm them down. I am not sure it did for me but it did help other general soreness. Don't sitz bath until your Doc tells you it is ok though. For me time is healing this wound I hope it does for you also...

Re: Bladder spasms versus infection
I too have this as previously stated. UTI 2nd antibiotic, and now they think it spread to kidneys. Had renal/bladder/pelvic ultrasounds yesterday, waiting on results of those as well as cultures. Sooo hoping they can get it under control. The pain is back to like the first few days, and the feeling of being sick on top of it all. Hoping you all are doing better! But be persistant if it dosn't!

Re: Bladder spasms versus infection
I had the bladder spasms, it felt achy when you went to the bathroom. No burning or real pain, just an annoying ache and not a steady stream of urine at times. I drank alot of water and alot of cranberry juice. I was better by end of week two. Best of luck to you in your recovery.

Re: Bladder spasms versus infection
At my 4 week exam i complained about frequent urination, not sleeping more than 3-4 hours because of the need to urinate, among other complaints. no one ever said all these things would change or cause problems, but anyways, i didn't think UTI because it didn't burn or hurt to pee. figured the backc pain was from sitting differently to deal with discomfort. my doc had also said void frequently so you don't stress the stitches, so i thought nothing of the frequency problems. during the exam, he said does this hurt? as he was pulling me down from the ceiling and shushing me from screaming in pain, he said that was your bladder, you have a bladder infection. wonderful. how did that happen?! on antibiotics 3 days now, still have back pains which are actually kidney issues, still feel pressure and frequent shooting, stabbing, sharp but short pains in my abdomen area. am i alone in this?

Re: Bladder spasms versus infection
I'm 11 days out from my TVH and my doc put me on a muscle relaxant because I was in so much pain anytime I pee (and other way)....Starting this afternoon it seems to have kicked in and my pain has gone from a 9 down to a 6 and I pray each day will continue to be better...See the doc on Monday for my 2 week post op.
We all need to just keep resting as much as we can!
Take Care,
Chris
