TAH Soon and am not at peace with taking my ovaries

Hi Everyone!

I have never posted and hope I am posting in the right place. I am 45 and had to have a blood transfusion for severe anemia (my hemogloblin level was a 5.4) it had happened so gradual that I had no idea that it was in as bad as shape as it was. I felt really bad but kept putting off going to the doctor. Anyway I have had all the tests run and I have 2 very large fibroids. I have been given a lupron shot to shrink everything.

I am now waiting for them to let me know when my surgery will be scheduled. The doctor and I discussed the removal of my ovaries. He told me that he would go ahead and take them while he was in there. I cannot decide if this will be the right decision for me. I have PCOS and I am extremely overweight. I don't want to gain anymore weight. I would love to hear what the pros and cons are of having my ovaries removed.

I honestly have not had any major problems on the lupron either. Hot flashes very minimal. Honestly I have felt better than I have in a long time after having the lupron shot. I have been wondering if I am considered estrogen dominant. Is there even such a thing? Anyway I would love to hear opinions! Thanks so much!

Re: TAH Soon and am not at peace with taking my ovaries

We are glad you have found us and hope you find the site helpful and supportive!

Have you had a second opinion yet about what is best for you? Different doctors have different skills that can allow them to offer different options, and they will have different opinions based on their training and experience.

As far as having your ovaries removed, it will not cure PCOS. Although the name implies PCOS is solely an ovarian problem, it is actually a disorder of the entire endocrine system. Also, having no ovaries can open the door to new health concerns and finding the right HRT balance can be challenging.

Yes, one can be estrogen dominant. Also, fat cells can produce and store a type of estrogen which can contribute to health issues and can also explain why you didn't have many symptoms while using Lupron.

Have you considered talking to your GP? S/he may have some advice for you as well as whomever manages your PCOS.

In my opinion, if your ovaries are healthy you should not have them removed simply because you are having a hysterectomy.

You have to decide with your dr what is right for you. I have one left. I felt like if it was not broken don't fix it. There are so many awesome people who are here to support you...no matter what you are not alone and are taking all the right steps in taking care of you.
