Almost ready to go
TAH scheduled for 06/27/12. Hoping to keep my ovaries, but won't know for sure until my doctor actually get's in there. I am pre-registered at the hospital, have had my pre-op exam with my doctor & my pre-op bloodwork with the hospital. Been wearing a blood bank band since last Friday in case I need a transfusion during surgery. Not looking forward to the bowel prep, but it's necessary so I'm OK with that....at least for now. We'll see how I feel about that Tuesday.
I am as mentally ready as possible. Honestly, my fibroid is so large that I can't wait to just get it out. Never had kids, but at my age (46) I resigned myself to the fact that they weren't in my cards long before the decision was made to have the hysterectomy.
My Aunt has graciously invited me to recover at her cottage at the beach. My mom passed away 6 years ago, and as wonderful as my Dad is (he's truly my hero...great man!), having a motherly presence around is just what the doctor ordered and I am taking my Aunt up on her offer. My long time boyfriend will visit, but since he has to work, it doesn't make sense for me to be home alone all day.
So my question is....what do I pack besides the obvious? I know what kind of clothing to pack for beach weather...done that for years and have supplemented with baggier clothing for recovery period. BUT, I can't even think of what I could bring to keep me occupied when I get bored. She has tons of books so that's covered. There's no internet or wi-fi, but there is TV for distraction. My other Aunt has a cottage next door, so there will be plenty of doting. Any thoughts?
I don't know....maybe I'm just masking my nerves by stressing over this. And since I have already "edited" & "previewed" this message a bazillion times, I'm guessing the nerves are definitely ramping up.

Re: Almost ready to go
A beach cottage recovery sounds ideal! It sounds like you are very mentally prepared. I have 6 more days to wait. Things you could take might be cards, scrabble, word scrambles, Sudoku, knitting, art pad, journal and things like that. I hope this helps. Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Re: Almost ready to go
Hi there, I'm 48 and never had kids either. I was in grad school forever and married my husband at 43 . I am just a few days short 3 weeks post op. I had everything removed but freckles..ha. We knew about the fibroids and cyst on my left ovary. But the endometriosis was a surprise. Evidently it doesn't always show up on Cat Scans. My procedure was laproscopic/vag. It took my surgeon more time in there as endo was Stage 4 and everywhere...even in abdominal cavity. And my fibroids were huge and difficult to get out, but she got em.
Glad to hear you are taking your aunt up on her offer. Sounds like a lovely place to recover and with lovely people! I did learn the bowel prep is important...as the surgeon evidently has likelihood of greater mobility in there and it lowers the risk of infection if leaked. When you start it you just want access to a potty to be easy
I did take an extra pillow to the hospital but I like my head propped up a bit, hairbrush. Oh, I got some new pj's to wear home. Hey, if we gotta go through this we have a right to new and cute jammies!! Honestly, you don't need a whole lot in the hospital. But take some personal items to feel comfy about it.
As far as recovery, boy that first 3 days I just wanted to sleep and take pain meds. My appetite was next to nothing so I did crackers and watermelon. I had all these books I wanted to read, well guess what, I was too groggy and sore to focus on a book. It came with time though. I'm still needing Ibuprofen and a Percocent here an there. Stay on top of the discomfort...they perscribe the meds for a reason. Oh, popsickels...nice way to get some hydration, bit of a treat, and it felt summer cool and fresh.
Stay in touch if you'd like to. You will be fine. The closer my date came (June 5th), I was like "bring it on." I just wanted all that outta there...so done with those fibroids and huge belly. This is a great site, I found a wonderful support here. Hug from Colorado!

Re: Almost ready to go
Your aunt's offer sounds wonderful. I think it will be a peaceful place to rest and recuperate.
I'm considering doing my long-overdue mending. It has been sitting in a bag for literally years. It's one of those things I never get around to doing. If you do crafts, puzzles or that type of thing, it might be a good way to keep your hands and mind busy without taxing your body. Maybe make something for your aunts as a thank-you gift.
I'm not generally a person who has the patience for crafts, but it seems like a good time to do it.
I've been hooked on the Internet for years, and I'm not sure how I'd fill my time without it. Perhaps I'd actually get stuff done.
