One week out (1/4) - worries about doing the right thing

Hello everyone!
Here is my story...
About 8 months ago my periods began to get heavier and heavier.
My lower back slowly began to hurt and I'd go to my chiropractor to see if that was the problem. It continued to hurt.
About 3 months ago my mom who is a nurse told me to go have myself check out so I went to see my Gyn. She had blood drawn and intravaginal ultra sound. My thyroid was irregular and I was anemic. They also found a 8cm fibroid on my uterus.
She recommended either....
Birth control
Ablation
Or hysterectomy

The top two evidently have low success and that leaves hysterectomy. I've got two wonderful children (7 and 9) so that isn't a factor -

But one week out I am wracked with worry if I am doing the right thing...did anyone else have this?? Any advice?

Thankful for you!!
Nicole

Hi Nicole! I'm familiar with your struggle to make this decision. I'm 43, with a 5 and 7 year old that previously had my tubes tied after my last C-section. I had a fibroid the size of my uterus that was scarred down to my pelvic wall and causing horrible periods. This was then combined with pre-cancerous paps with +HPV 16. This led to two colposcopies and every 6 month paps, etc.
My dr mentioned hysterectomy in Jan 2015 and I chickened out all year until 12/7. I'm now 3 weeks post the DaVinci hysterectomy, took everything but my ovaries (no endometriosis). I'm not going to lie, recovery the first two weeks for me was rough, but there are many other sisters who breezed thru. Only you can make the right decision for you. I was a complete nervous wreck up until the moment of surgery, but now that it's over I have absolutely no regrets. I'm looking forward to a happier 2016. I wish you peace on your continued journey. This is a wonderful place for support. Just remember, most will talk more about problems than successes. You'll have your own journey.

Re: One week out - worries about doing the right thing

Oh thank you so much!
I had preop today and my Dr put so many worries at ease! Even my lab nurse had this same surgery and told me it was the best thing too! I'm so glad to know these feelings are normal - and now to try and rest it up before Monday!!!

Thank you for your reply!! It really means a lot!

Re: One week out - worries about doing the right thing

I had a hard time dealing with having any surgery, drove everyone around me batty I was so freaked out. My fibroid was melon sized, I was severely anemic, frequent headaches, short of breath, and had kidney stones my urologist thought was due to the fibroid pressure. It was preventing me from being me and having fun and feeling good.

Surgery should never be taken lightly, but when I wrote down all the pros and cons, well the result was "geter done." I had abdominal hysterectomy, left ovaries in, went home from the hospital 23 hours later. I took a pain pill on the way home, and took halves three more times over the next 48 hours. I didn't even have to take OTC stuff either.

I was lucky, and focused my diet weeks before, no gas or constipation either. All the reading scrap booking etc I planned, never got done. I wasn't still much after week one, and think I slept the first three days from exhaustion of my pre-surgery freakout, cleaning, cooking manic event I had.

Your sisters are here for you! Healthy healing wishes!

Re: One week out (1/4) - worries about doing the right thing

Just wanted to wish you luck I had my ab hyst at the start of November and while recovery has been slow it's also been steady and I'm almost back to myself again. I'd never had any kind of surgery before so I was pretty nervous, but I also knew it had to be done because I didn't really have much of a life thanks to the fibroids. Now they're gone, there's no bleeding, and I can't quite get my head around the fact there will be no more bleeding at all! woohoo!

I'm sure all will go well and you'll be on the road to recovery in no time
