Any one have other surgeries to compare to?

I am having LSH tomorrow with diVinci - - not sure what the proper acronyms are! (uterus out, ovaries/cervix in). In the past, I had gall bladder removed and had lap band surgery. I had no problems at all, woke up and was ready to rock and roll. I walked out of the hospital for both. Of course, there was some soreness and stuff - but I don't remember being down for more than 3 or 4 days. Then I was pretty much back to normal - of course, I wasn't going to the gym and slinging weights or anything! But most normal day-to-day things were doable.

So - - am I being naive in expecting pretty much the same thing? I'm not trying to make like I'm "super woman" or that others are just wimps - -- I know that everyone is different - different rates of recovery, different pain thresholds, etc. But I'm reading all this stuff about weeks and weeks and weeks - - and still not back to normal. I'm reading things like "couldn't vacuum at 6 weeks".

Hoping there are others that have had other surgeries (like gall bladder) and can kind of compare the recovery/issues between the two............

(Think this would probably make more sense in "post-op" - - but seems like I'm not allowed to post there yet!)

Well I know they are kind of different but I had nasal reconstruction and shoulder surgery. And my hysterectomy was do to extreme cancer so those can be more traumatic because of the exploratory aspect. Are you having it vaginally or abdominally? Mine was abdominal and pretty tough to recover from vs my other surgeries.

Re: Any one have other surgeries to compare to?

I have to say this is my first abdominal surgery. I had "tubes" put in my ears multiple times as a child, oral surgery and a laminectomy / discectomy on L5 / S1 in 2004. I was in some sort of "lala" land thinking this would be the normal "every day is better" type of surgical recovery - you know like everything else I've had done!

I can't speak for everyone's recovery but I can say for absolute certainty that, It will take time! I find it such a frustrating recovery one day you feel fantastic and the next you feel like you got run over. I'm currently at 20 weeks, near the end of the day I get a low dull ache and shooting twinges, compared to the pain before surgery it's nothing, but I'm over it! SOOOO over it! I would like to permanently break up with my heat / cold pack.

I've heard some women have no problem going about their everyday life after 2 weeks (jealous much - I think so!) but they are risking painful internal scar tissue (adhesions), or rips and tears and bleeding, I'm not sure about you, but I had the surgery to fix the pain to begin with so I did as little as possible until I had the go ahead from my surgeon at 5 weeks and even at that eased into it! Please don't try to be a superwoman, and take as much time as possible!

Re: Any one have other surgeries to compare to?

Mine will be done with the da Vinci robot.

Gall bladder and lap band were the traditional laparoscopic surgery.

Had sinus surgery as well - but didn't include that one since it was so different.

THANKS!

Re: Any one have other surgeries to compare to?

I had my gall bladder removed in '10, a laparoscopic tubal ligation with removal of endometriosis in '11 and then 2 ovarian cysts removed in December of '12. I had a LAVH with left ovary removal and bladder sling last Thursday, and I would say it has definitely been a bigger deal than my other surgeries. Mostly I've had bladder troubles since the surgery (2 ER visits, 1 walk-in clinic, 1 doctor's visit since Friday). But even if it wasn't for the bladder problems, I think it would still have been...more...to recover from than my other surgeries. I nap during the day and I've definitely been letting others take care of me (which is not normal for me).

Re: Any one have other surgeries to compare to?

Thanks - I'm lucky in that I'm not having pain. My complaint is the heavy bleeding. I knew I had to do something when I was almost in tears at bedtime because I knew I'd be up 5-6 times to change tampons - and still probably end up having to wash the sheets! Enough was enough - even though it only lasted 4-5 days a month, I figured I wasn't using that uterus anyway - - why keep it?

I know there are folks that have MUCH worse issues - and I'm sure that probably factors into recovery as well.

Thanks for you response!
