leary of bowel prep

I must be weird or something. I'm not worried about the surgery or the recovery; I'm anxious about the bowel prep. I've never had an enema before, much less given myself one. I have to drink the phospho soda and do not look forward to running to the toilet all day. I have to drink clear liquids all day as well, and I am an eater. So I know I'll be fighting the hunger. My Mom thinks I'm so silly. LOL. Oh, well, maybe the hyster is too big for me to worry about and I have to worry about the little things. Thanks for letting me vent.

glowie,

I don't want to concern you, but the anesthesia shuts down your bowels, and you certainly don't want them full with yesterday's food prior to going into surgery. The bowel prep is actually a blessing!

You will need to walk the day of surgery to get rid of gas, let alone having to empty a steak thru a bm. Please look at it as giving a gift to your body. Empty bowels is the only way to go into this type of surgery!

Blessings,

i have to tell ya, i do not dig the bowel prep either! i've done this with all of my surgeries including my lavh on 1/19/06.... i was always constipated prior to and was freaking out on how i was going to handle to bowel prep. my surgery this past time was on a thursday so on sunday, monday, and tuesday i ate lightly. i am an eater too, but decided to do it that way rather than deal with the toilet troubles. my meals on those days consisted of lots of fiber rich foods. not only did it ease up my constipation, it made the bowel prep much more tolerable. i honestly headed to the bathroom with the phosphosoda and enema probably only a few times. as far as giving yourself and enema, sounds funny, but.... on the box of the Fleets Enemas it give 2 positions to choose. i chose the knee position and it was not messy and was actually pretty comfy. sounds funny huh? trust me, the process isn't too bad......

Thanks so much for your replies sisters. It makes me feel better. I'll just look at it as a positive. I'm usually not a baby about things, so I'm surprising myself a little. I'll get through it. Thanks so much.

Hi,
I had to drink the phospho soda too...I had the lemon ginger flavor. Bleach!!! I had no clue how fast it would work, I misjudged it and ran to the toilet...and everything started flowing as soon as I stood up! Don't get too far from the toilet ! Also, don't worry about wanting to eat, that stuff will take all your appetite away. Sorry to be a bummer, I only wish someone had given me this advice. The surgery was not too bad, it's achy and tiring, but all the hospital staff should be nice and helpful. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Take care,
Judy

Thanks so much Judy. I'll be sure to stick close to the bathroom.
