LSH/BSO vs. SAH/BSO

Had my pre-op today I am a completely, perfectly health woman with a terrible case of PMS… So the main purpose of this surgery is to remove the ovaries.

I was all prepared for the LSH/BSO but after talking to my Doctor I am seriously leaning toward the SAH/BSO.

The ovaries come our and the cervix stays on both surgeries. But she feels that even though the recoup time is longer for the abdominal method there is a greater chance of missing something or hitting the wrong thing when done laparoscopicly.

Do I want 1, 4 inch incisions or 4, I inch incisions.

When I go online to research I decide on the LSH. But…when I talk to friends, family or my Dr. I decide on the SAH.

I don’t really care about now (recoup / time off work / incisions) I want what is best or me for my future.

I know that none of you can really answer me on which is better because none of you have experienced both. I just feel very unsure and I need to let her know my preference tomorrow AM.

Any comments or insight? Please help me work through what will be right for me.

LSH/BSO vs. SAH/BSO

Sue Ellen,

I am 7 weeks post op from a LSH and I could not be happier with my surgery results.

Both a SAH and a LSH are major surgery. I think which ever way you go it is your decision.

I do question the "missing or hitting something" laparoscopically. In my opinion, I feel lap surgery is the cutting edge of hyst surgeries today.

In my research, a LSH helps preclude/prevent future bladder problems. With me, my bladder works better now than it has in years. Along with my colon.

Any surgery can have a complication and I think you will find that with any hyst surgery. That is something to look at.

As far as recovery time, a LSH is less evasive than a SAH. I was back to work - slowly - at 2 weeks and I have gotten better with each day.

Good Luck!! A hyst will be a life changing expereince for the better!!

P.S. I had two hip incisions. 1/4" and 1/2". I also had a belly button incision. That was it!!

LSH/BSO vs. SAH/BSO

Hi Sue Ellen! I think that if you feel confident in your DR, I would go with what your DR recommends. Friends, family, even hystersisters aren't familiar with your own medical history, nor do we have the training to be able to recommend a particular procedure over another.

You might take a look at this link, which has some good information explaining and comparing the different types of hysterectomy:

But ultimately, I really do think it's all about making the decision with a DR you trust.
