Low white blood count
I had a TAH about a week and a half ago. The day before my surgery, my GYN called to tell me that she didn't think she could operate because my pre-op tests showed a very low white blood cell count. She sent me directly to a internal medicine dr. and she drew more blood. Late in the afternoon before surgery, she said although my count was low, she gave the okay to go ahead with the surgey, but said I need to have more blood drawn one week after surgery to see if the count has gone up. I didn't go, ( I forgot) but I have a post-op appt. with my gyn on Monday. In the meantime, does anyone know what this could mean? Someone else here said they had low hemoglobin. Is that the same thing?

Low white blood count
Hi HulaDiva,
I had low hemoglobin, which is actually low red blood cell count. If you need some info on white blood cells, you can go to google.com and enter "low white blood cell", there is some different info there. Hope you feel better soon!

Low white blood count
I have had a low white count for over 10 yrs. My doctor sent me to a hematologist (blood doc) about 10 yrs ago. He ran every test under the sun, and everything came back normal except the white count itself. He asked if I was around anything toxic in my life, like chemicals (not that I know of) and just told me to have my blood checked every 3-4 months. My low white count has stayed low all these years. Must be a genetic glitch, since my father has a low count also (not as low as mine)...my white count did go up right after surgery (inflammation from the surgery trauma caused this, and so does having a cold of flu)
Everytime I see a new doc for something, they always mention the low white count.
I still don't know why its low. My red count was low and i've always been anemic. My gyno said that now that I've had the hyster, and the endo is gone, my red cells should go back up to normal.
If I were you, I would see a hematologist and get a work up to see if there is a reason why the white count is goofy for you too. Just to rule out anything. hope this helps
