EKG prior to surgery?!

I went in to sign the surgery papers today and when the nurse fouind out I'd been on high blood pressure meds for less than 6 months, she said I'll probably have to have an EKG before surgery.

I find myself scared without reason. I don't think they will find anything worrisome on the test, but I'm still afraid something will come up to delay the surgery.

Anyone else having problems being afraid of things they really have no reason to be afraid of? I'm like a momma bear protective of my surgery date.

Re: EKG prior to surgery?!

I felt the same way about my surgery date. I was terrified of catching something and stayed away from anyone who seemed even a little bit sick. I had to have an EKG prior to my surgery. I was told it was required for anyone over 50 and I'm 52. It took 10 min's and it was fine. Yours will be too so try not to stress over it. You wouldn't want to stress about the EKG so much that you send your BP up

No doubt! My fiance had a heart attack in December, so I've sat through quite a few of these lately, so in my head I know the test is real easy to go through.

My mom would tell me I'm being a worry wart.

Re: EKG prior to surgery?!

As Cathy said, worrying about it will make your BP go up. My hospital requires an EKG for patients over 50, so I had to have one, too. It was easy and painless. And nothing untoward showed up.

Wasn't there a song that said Don't worry, be happy?

I had to have an EKG before my surgery too. As said, it was short and easy. Just try to relax and not stress too much

I had an EKG before my surgery also....and it didn't take long at all. Try to look at it this way, they are covering all bases so they can protect you in surgery.

Re: EKG prior to surgery?!

I'm 30 and I had an EKG prior to my surgery as well. From what the hospital told me was that it's just a standard procedure. Hang in there!

Re: EKG prior to surgery?!

I like your "mama bear" analogy with your surgery date. My DH was in Mexico, returning the weekend before my surgery, when the Swine Flu broke out! I was scared for him to come home just in case he got it, and they would cancel my surgery. I should have been scared he might get sick - but I was so eager to get my misery over, my priorities got a little mixed up. Happily, he did not get the flu and my surgery went off without a delay. BTW - I have high BP and had to have the EKG - no problems!

Re: EKG prior to surgery?!

I didn't really give any thought to losing my surgery date until I was at the hospital. My blood pressure was crazy high, something like 160/100 and everyone kept asking me if I was on blood pressure meds. No, it's usually around 110/70 but for the week prior every time it was taken it was high.

The anesthesiologist, upon seeing my BP reading, expressed some concern and that's when I thought "oh no, this isn't gonna happen!" There I was, hooked up to the IV, wearing my sassy surgical gown and suddenly there was the thought that it WASN'T GONNA HAPPEN!

Well, after reviewing my records the anesthesiologist decided to give the green light, with the caveat that I check my BP on a regular basis just in case I was developing a problem. I was just so relieved that he gave the go-ahead, I don't think I could have gone through all the drama to prepare for surgery again!
