Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jul 17-Jul 23,2017
Post op day 4: I actually got dressed and left the house today. I spent an hour at the library painting a rock. It was nice. It was also fun. But definitely tiring. I came home and slept for four hours! At least I know I should be able to make it to church tomorrow.
Found out from the doctor the burning pain is actually normal surgical pain. I don't have active bleeding, no pus, no angry red incision and no fever, so I was told to take my pain meds. I've been trying to get by with ibuprofen alone. I have epilepsy and a low seizure threshold so narcotics are not my friend. I took the pain med last night and will again tonight. I'll take it during the day if the pain gets bad. Otherwise, I'll stick to ibuprofen.
A friend told me that she used a girdle after her hysterectomy 30+years ago. Was controversial then. I have a belly band but don't use it all day long. What, if anything, ate you using to help with swelling and pain?

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jul 17-Jul 23,2017
I am really enjoying reading all the posts. I just discovered this site and am so grateful to read others progress reports as I was starting to wonder how I was progressing.
I had my TLH, including removal of both ovaries, and endometriosis, on Tuesday 18th and was home from hospital on the Thursday. I have felt pretty good since about Wednesday morning. I have bouts of tiredness and often in late afternoon I have a little pain come. But I think that I am generally pretty good.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jul 17-Jul 23,2017
Hi everyone. I am starting day 6 today. Feel amazingly well. Never any nausea. Bowel movements every day since day 2 with no pain. Lots of energy.....too much. Have not felt need for naps. No weakness even after being on my feet for hours. Only problem is my swollen belly. Gas is passing regularly but my belly is very tight and I look 8 months pregnant. Any input?

From what I have seen..the swollen belly is normal..however it can be caused by overdoing it and not resting enough as well..especially if it is just now starting to swell..being on your feet too long may be the reason..I would call your doctor to confirm your activity limits..I am on day 5 and still need to sit and rest most of the day..i walk as much as i can but in house only so far..def not sleeping like i thought i would but still making myself rest..good luck to you!!

Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jul 17-Jul 23,2017
Hi all,
Sending good morning thoughts to you all.
Great to hear about the bike ride and the rock painting, that does sound fun! I haven't ventured out of the house yet but maybe soon? You ladies are an inspiration
I am doing pretty well pain wise, just very manageable discomfort on Advil or Aleve. I had to stop the pain meds Wednesday because of the terrible (eak) constipation...which seems a bit better and I dearly hope is behind me now. I am taking miralax and colace but wondering if I could stop those soon? Any experience or thoughts?
I was wondering if anyone was taking vitamins or other supplements to help optimize healing? I have read that protein, vitamins a and c, and zinc are all important so trying to get those from foods, in addition to fiber! Kiwis have been a go to, and some chicken veggies soup, butternut squash soup, had yogurt yesterday. I ordered some magnesium + calcium supplement and a probiotic and ground flax seed which hopefully will arrive tomorrow, hoping all these would help with the regularity issue.
Wishing you all a lovely day!

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jul 17-Jul 23,2017
Had my TAH on July 20th. Definitely been a rough recovery process so far. I came home from the hospital last night. My surgery was early early on Thursday morning. the pain was unbelievable. I was very surprised by how much more it hurt than a C-section. I guess I should have been more prepared for that.
Nights are not my friend. I didn't sleep very well in the hospital, and I did not sleep very well last night my first night home. They gave me Ativan in the hospital to help me sleep. She did send me home with some but I completely forgot about it last night. I was up every 2 hours. And the pain of getting up that frequently, miserable. I'm definitely still taking painkillers. My doctor prescribed straight oxycodone that way I can take Tylenol or Motrin at different times to help it last longer. My doctor also gave me a belly binder. That definitely helps at night for what I'm getting in and out of bed. But I can't wear it all the time.
My doctor said that my uterus was in worse shape than she even expected. I lost quite a bit of blood but thankfully I didn't have to have a transfusion.
So I am home, in pain, set up in a nice comfy chair that's easy to get out of, and resting. Oh and I was able to already move my bowels at the hospital yesterday, for which I was very thankful.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jul 17-Jul 23,2017
Good morning, sisters!
, Jacthorp!
Thank you to all sisters who are taking the time to post here. It's great to see how you are giving each other advice- that's what this is all about!
Jacthorp, I am glad you are doing relatively well. Keep drinking water, walking and resting!
Now, let's talk about that swollen tummy aka swelly belly!
The term "swelly belly" (Latin term: Swellibellicus) is a HysterSisters word that refers to post-op swelling of the abdomen. It can occur in any type of hysterectomy procedure, but seems to be more prevalent in abdominal surgeries.
Swelly belly is caused by trauma to the abdominal tissues, gasses used during surgery, and/or fluids collecting in the tissues due to trauma during surgery. Swelly belly seems to make an appearance soon after surgery in most ladies (though not always all) and may hang around for several weeks or even months. It is worsened by too much activity, lifting things that are too heavy, being on your feet too long, stuffing yourself in jeans that are too tight, and just generally overdoing it. It also seems to be worse in the evenings, after a long day of overdoing it.
Sometimes a good support panty can help too, but again, make sure it isn't too tight, or it can make the problem worse. Occasionally, ice packs or a heating pad may help too, but check with your doctor first before using either. I have been using my binder religiously, even slept with it on for many weeks. I had a nice nurse in the hospital who slipped me a 2nd binder, so that one is always in the wash (cold water, hang dry). If you did not receive a binder in the hospital, consider ordering one here on this site (HysterSisters Store has the Perfect Pocket Abdominal Binder).
"How do I get rid of it?" You don't. It has to go away on it's own. Resting may help: not overdoing it, not lifting things that are too heavy, not being on your feet too long. Swelly belly is just one of those things you may have to endure until your body has healed.
NOTE: If your tummy becomes hot, red, or painful, please call your doctor. This is NOT normal and NOT part of the normal post-op swelling. (taken from article on Tummy care/swelly belly. Entire article here: https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/article_163685.htm )
As for vitamins: I am a big fan for vitamins and minerals. However, since all of us had different surgeries, please do check with your doctor whether you can start or continue your vitamins and minerals. I had to wait 2 weeks in order to minimize the chances of bleeding.
Sending your lots of hugs today and wishing you a good day.

Re: Recovery Progress Reports for Hysterectomy dates Jul 17-Jul 23,2017
I am realizing how easy it is to overdo yourself. At least for me anyway. I should have had my husband leave one of my older kids home to help me. I'm in a lot of pain right now and it's because I had to get myself something to eat, then get myself all set up in my chair, and anytime I need anything I have to get up and get it. And I'm definitely feeling it. Sitting with the heating pad, belly binder, and hoping that the pain meds kick in soon.
I'm also noticing a lot of pain when I need to make a bowel movement, and even when I need to go pee. Is anyone else experiencing that?
