5 weeks and going...
I had a full hysterectomy 5 weeks ago today. I tell myself each day that I only have to go this way once - there are no repeat surgeries! I meet with my Gyn today to talk about HRT. I really don't know too much about this as my mom died of ovarian cancer when I was young and my friends have not gone through this. I have had flashes since the surgery which seem to be getting more frequent and lasting longer as time goes on. I also have migraines and some dizziness. I am afraid the HRT will cause mood swings. I have not had mood swings since before the surgery (which has been a pleasant change). Any suggestions about questions to ask or things I should watch for when on HRT? My husband tends to tell me I complain too much, however I don't want to do something that can keep me from moving down the right path toward recovery.

Welcome meleanna, i dont have to have hrt but you can find many discussion for the types of hrt via the forums as well as articles on this site. Also I am sure other systers will chime in with good advice. I am your surgery week syster. Please look for a thread that says "recovery week progress reports ending jul 4" and pop in a say hi. Re: 5 weeks and going...
Well my Dr. started me on HRT literally in the recovery room 6 weeks ago. I am using the vivelle dot. I started out with 0.075. Used it for 5.5 weeks. I was having headaches daily, crying alot and so he lowered my patch to 0.05 and I have noticed in the last day that my headache is almost gone and I have only cried one time and that was only because my husband hurt my feelings. Before I was crying at least 5 times a day. So that is my limited experience with HRT. At 45 I did not want to have to endure years of hotflashes and all the other things that go with not using hormones.

Hi, I had endo, so my Dr and I want to wait 3 mos prior to trying HRT. I have hot flashes, but they are manageable. Did you have endo?

Re: 5 weeks and going...
I did have endo and also adenomysosis. They said my uterus was 3 times the normal size. I actually feel so much less pressure that I didn't realize was there all of the time before. My hot flashes started out manageable but seem to be increasing daily...but I have to keep telling myself this is MUCH better than before!
Thanks for your reply!

Re: 5 weeks and going...
Hi! Thank you for your reply! It is a nice feeling having others to 'talk' with who have the same experience! Especially having the surgery the same week. How are you feeling? Are you still tired? Any pain? I get cramps after walking, but I am trying to do a little every day. The fatigue is the hardest part. As tired as I am, I cannot sleep.
I did meet with my dr. and she is starting me on Estrogen Only. I have a history of breast issues, and a large family history for colon cancer, as well as my mom having ovarian cancer. This HRT reduces the risk of breast and colon cancers. I will let you know if I feel some relief. She said I should know in 1-2 weeks. Thanks again for your reply and let me know how you are progressing...we are all in this together!

My husband's perception...
When I had my pre-op appointment for my hysterectomy my husband went with me. I thought it may be helpful for him to hear what I would be going through and what would be needed in terms of support at home after my surgery. After everything about the surgery was explained he was asked if he had any questions. He said he missed what was said, but he understands everything...he had a vasectomy and he understands what I would be going through!!!! I went back today - two months after that appointment and the nurses were still laughing about what he said!!!

Re: 5 weeks and going...
I didn't want to do HRT so I'm using Estroven PM(otc). This is available at many stores. It comes in many versions. The PM version has some natural herb to help with sleep. I also added extra calcuim and vit d.

Re: 5 weeks and going...
I have been on the Vivelle patch since arriving in my room at the hospital post op.
I have found that I feel very stable and "Normal" on my patch. My hot flashes are pretty minimal and tolerable and the night sweats are few and far between now. I am still dealing with headaches, but we are working on my dosing schedule to see if that will help me.
For me personally, I am happy on HRT, at least for now. But everyone is different and has to do what they and their doctor decide is best for them.

Re: 5 weeks and going...
i'm on HRT... started on vivelle dot .5 at the hospital, went up to .1 at 6 weeks due to headaches, insomnia, hot flashes, fatigue... at 10 weeks estrace .5 was added orally to help with my anxiety & hot flashes... i'm now 18 weeks and just had my oral estrace switched to vaginal for dryness & itching... still on vivelle .1 as well... its definitely been a roller coaster ride for sure since my hyst...
