Doctors do not have enough surgery time

Hi...my name is Alli and i am 45 and new to this group...
had a lap done March 26th and the Gyn. found 2 fibroids golf ball size that are pressing on bladder and rectum.....she did not have enough time to do the hyster.so she now has me sceduled for April 26th...She will be removing the 2 fibroids and uterus.
My doctor told me that my local hospital only gives her 3 days a month for her surgery time.....does anyone else think this is quite strange or are hospitals that booked up?
I am very nervous and faint very very easily......i just think of the procedure and i can go right out.
I just wish she could have done this while there for the lap.

Three days a month does not sound like much, but all I have for comparison is my own gyn's schedule. I'm sure it depends on how many docs all need the surgical suites, how busy the hospital is, whatever your gyn has negotiated with the hospital. The bad part is this doesn't leave too many options for the patients.

As for the fainting, I can relate. I've been a fainter since I was a little girl. I thought I got over this while pregnant with my daughter (21 years ago now!), but I've learned over the years to always lay down when I get a shot or when they need to take blood. It's embarassing, but better to let the nurses know that you're a fainter so they can be on the lookout. I don't think we are all that unusual. You'll make it, despite all your fears. I know it's tough ... I don't even watch those medical shows on TV because if it gets really graphic, I'm likely to faint!

WELCOME to the site, we are sooo glad you found us.I am so sorry that the Hyst could not be done last time you had surgery. Yes it does sound abit strange, but I can not really comment on the hospitols, because being in New zealand things are probably done differently.
Hun concentrate on being calm, relaxation breathing etc. I know it is so hard to do but please try.
Remember we are all here for you and will do our best to help you get through all of this. there are so many wonderful woman on this site only too willing to help give a shoulder or just a hug. You are not alone.

It may seem strange, but it makes sense. She has to have office time, etc. My DR performs her surgeries on Tuesdays, and if needed assists another DR in her practice on Fridays. So basically she only performs surgery 4 times a month plus assists. I'm sure in an an emergency she would get you in sooner.

The DR who had the OR booked before my surgery went over by hours. If my DR planned to do the surgery then go see patients at the office her entire day would have been messed up, not to mention how inconvenienced all those patients that had been scheduled would have been.

I don't know if it is the Hospital or my Dr. preference but he only does surgery on Tuesdays. I think Tuesday is a good day though because I know that atleast he will be around until 5:00 while I am in the castle if I need anything. I am glad I will not have to wait for him to get off the golf course on Sat. to get me any pain med I might need.

My doctors only do surgery on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Strange how I never really thought about it until I saw your post! I just chalked it up to the military. There are tons of surgeons at the hospital, and at 5-7 that do hysters. So, I guess they have some kind of schedule!

I had 2 different surgeons - 1 for the hyster, the other for the bladder/rectal work. My urologist (the 2nd dr) only does surgery on Monday mornings. I thought that sounded kind of weird, but in the preop the nurses went on and on about how highly regarded he was at the hospital. Then it made me worry that they hadn't even known who my gyn was. Now I have to say they both did great work and I am very pleased.

Do you have a tendency towards low blood pressure? My normal pressure is in the 90 over 60 range -- sometimes even lower -- and I think that is what contributes to my light-headedness in the face of stress. Like some of the others said, just tell the doctor or nurse before the procedure that you faint easily, and they'll let you lie down and just generally keep an eye on you. I've always found them to be very sympathetic and accomodating to my quirk, and since I've started doing this, I haven't "spun-out" once

yes i do have low blood pressure....not quite sure what it is off hand but i know it is low...
i will tell the doctors and nurses about my fainting....i seem to get so upset i start shaking like i am shivering....i guess i am a big baby.
