5 weeks post hysterectomy: Groin pain where adhesion removed, hernia worry

Hello sisters, I'm in week 5 post-op, LAVH/robotic, total + ovaries and cervix. I'm having lower right side/groin pain where my surgeon removed an adhesion (between my colon and abdominal wall, from past gallbladder surgery). I'm having intermittent sharp pain there which sometimes travels in a sharp straight line down the front of my thigh. At my 5-wk post op exam yesterday, my surgeon was not worried. It's much worse today, after more walking and stretching and light abdominal exercises last night. Has anyone else had this or have advice? I keep worrying it's a hernia although I don't see any bulge. Thank you so much. And thank you for this whole website which is so supportive.

Re: 5 weeks post hysterectomy: Groin pain where adhesion removed, hernia worry

At 5 weeks, you're still very much healing. There's nothing magical about your release date, and for many the journey to full healing is more like 4, 6 months or longer after surgery. I didn't fully buy into that until I had a few more months in the rear view mirror myself.

If it were a hernia, you would likely see a bulge. What makes me think it's where you are in healing is that it's much worse after "more walking and stretching and light abdominal exercises" the night before. That's the classic clue that you pushed yourself too hard and your body is responding to the stress. Pull back instead of pushing through. You still need rest periods between activities and you can't hurry recovery. Also check out Returning to Real Life After Hysterectomy, about midway through the article.

I got dull aches and swelling through 8 weeks, and it would be worse when I did more than my body was ready for. Even after 8 weeks, I'd go to the mat with those aches whenever I'd intensely engage my abs - the last time being at 5 months from a short but intense abs workout. The aches and swelling would last for a day or two, and I knew to pull back and not try whatever it was for a few more weeks.
