New kind of bowel prep

My doctor originally perscribed 2 bottles of Fleets Phospho-Soda. Since I had never heard of it before, I decided to Google it and found that there are several lawsuits out there about kidney failure related to this stuff. Fleet has pulled all of the "over the counter" Phospo-Soda off the market and now its only available by perscription. I emailed my doctor with my concerns and was then told that they are in the process of switching to a different bowel prep. She told me to throw it away and called in a perscription for two bottles of the Magnesium Citrate. I was on a clear liquid diet the entire day before surgery (and I drank ALOT of fluids!). I drank both bottles of Magnesium Citrate at 5 pm (I was still drinking alot of other fluids to keep myself hydrated). It started working working within an hour, and by 10:30 pm I was pretty well cleaned out. My doctor also perscribed a Fleet enema just before bed, and another on 1st thing in the morning. The whole process was not as bad as I had expected.

Yes, I have used both Fleets and MagCitrate. I hate to think what that huge dose of salts does to my body (both are salts, different from table salt but still drawing water into your bowels the same way). Neither of them worked very well on me (as I mentioned, I'm SLOW), one took 11 hours and the other took over 24 hours. Per the doc's orders, I am going to follow the directions for the Miralax and Dulcolax combination, and I will start a few hours early. If I need an additional enema before surgery, then so be it!

2 days to go...

my doctor just prescribed a fleet enema the night before and that did it for me, plus the day before I only had clear liquid diet, but its best to talk to your doctor and do as he says....

It worked!

...And it worked better and less unpleasantly than the Fleet's or MagCitrate.

Congrats on that! And best wishes on your surgery tomorrow. My pre-op appointment is tomorrow, so I'm anxiously waiting to hear what (and if) I'll be told to do bowel prep. But now I'm prepared. :-) mm

I am scheduled for a robotic-assisted laparascopic total hysterectomy on 3/3. I just had my last doctor's appt. pre-surgery and was given my pre-op instructions. My doctor suggested magnesium citrate at noon and 6 pm the day before and an enema the morning of.
