First Bowel Movement after hysterectomy

Completed surgery on Monday 8/14/17 and wondering if my first BMs were normal. Was given a suppository before leaving the hospital yesterday and had a small BM soon after arriving home then a bit more this morning. But the stool looks quite strange (very small & round like rocks with black spots) and I'm wondering if this is normal or maybe a consequence of the suppository (never had one b4).

Re: First Bowel Movement

Bowel movements like what you've described are a sign of constipation, a normal consequence of hysterectomy surgery. Personally, I would not rely on the suppositories too much, because your bowel can become dependent on them, which would make matters worse. One thing I highly recommend is to take regular walks. Drink choices that can also help include "enough water to swamp a canoe," peppermint tea, warmed up prune juice, a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon, and a smoothie with almond milk, spinach, cherries and ground flaxseeds. Other helpful foods include whole grain cereal and dried apricots. Another top tip, to get things moving as nature intended is to squat on the toilet right after you eat; this stimulates the gastro-colic reflex, in which the stomach tells the brain that it's full, then the brain tells the colon to empty its contents, to make room for the new stuff coming in, and the squat position properly aligns the rectum, so the poop can pass through more smoothly. Happy pooping, and best wishes for your continued recovery!

Re: First Bowel Movement

Should I be at all concerned about sutures in my cervical area? I am guessing that the first bowel movement will create a lot of pressure in that area.
