Prep before surgery ?

I have read several posts that mentioned a bowel clean out prior to surgery. My surgery is scheduled for 06/04 and I have my pre-admission testing on 05/30. I will not see the doctor again and nothing has been mentioned about anything other than not eating and drinking after midnight prior to surgery. I'm having a TAH/BSO. Is it normal to NOT have to go through any special prep before this type of surgery?
This sight has been a real lifesaver for me!

Prep before surgery ?

Joanie, I'm sure everywhere is different but I was given instructions for bowel prep at the hospital during pre admission appointment. At the very least, they could tell you if it's necessary to contact your Dr. Good luck to you!

Prep before surgery ?

My surgery was 6/4 one year ago. You'll have yours on my first anniversary

I would guess that it's a 50/50 thing with doctors. Some ladies do not have to do anything. I was told about the bowel prep at my pre-op appointment. Didn't know anything about it before that. They told me to drink magnesium citrate. It was only 10 ounces and I figured I could drink that by chugging it straight down. After 8 ounces I had to stop to breathe and yuk. It took a moment before I could force myself to finish it. Other ladies say the mag cit isn't bad though. I think there are different flavors and I just didn't like mine--maybe a differnt one would have been better?

Good luck!

Prep before surgery ?

I had my TVH/BSO on Apr. 9, not quite a month ago, & then had an emergency surgery on Apr. 21. I did not have to do a bowel prep before the hyst & they didn't even do an enema on me before the emergency surgery either. The preps are up to each individual . Some require all kinds of preps & some require next to nothing. My only required a betadine douche the morning of & nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before. Ask your dr. S/he'll let you know what their requirements are.

i think it depends....

...on what type of procedure you're having. I had a rectocele repair along with my TVH so I HAD to be cleaned out- that gallon of go-lytely plus two enemas in the morning...from what I've read here, most doctors don't have you do BOTH...I'm beginning to think mine was a sadist...ha ha
good luck!

Prep before surgery ?

No bowel prep was suggested for me. I was wondering if they forgot to tell me, but some surgeons don't require it.

Prep before surgery ?

I wondered about that myself. My surgery is on May 27 and all my instructions say is no eating or drinking after midnight. I even asked my dr. if anything else was necessary and he said no. Not that I'm complaining--my sister had to drink that awful 'go-lytely' stuff and she said it was the worst part of the whole thing!

Good luck,
Kim

Prep before surgery ?

Hi Joanie

I had a TAH and had no bowel prep. The only instruction I had was nothing to eat or drink after midnight. My surgery was at 8.30 next morning.

All the best.

If they have you do anything, they should give you the instructions at your pre op appt. I was required to do an enema, a betadine douche and a betadine shower. Much easier than the nasty stuff some of the ladies have had to drink.
