Endometrial hyperplasia ??????

I recently went to a new Ob/Gyn and because I have heavy bleeding during my periods she did a ultrsound and a biopsy. I found out after the endo biopsy and an ultra-sound that i have Endometrial hyperplasia w/atypia. I am going to have a D and C on Sept 2nd to find out how bad it is and whether I need a hysterectomy. I have been really upset since I found this out. I have been reading a lot of the posts here but I haven't seen anyone who has had to have a hyster for this. Please if there is anyone out there I would love to hear about your thoughts. I am so scared even of the D and C.

Sorry to hear of your upsetment.
You will find many women on this website that have had hysterectomies for hyperplasia w/atypia, many who have not, and many different opinions concerning the matter.. a lot has to do w/peoples' backgrounds and beliefs.

I myself have chosen to treat endometrial cancer (assumed early stage) w/progestins, not surgery.. and you know that cancer is worse than hyperplasia. I did it because I haven't had children, but I've known someone who has tried it even after having children.

I hope that this site will help you make an informed choice.

I'm sorry to hear you are having a difficult time. It's so frustrating and frightening to hear that our female organs have developed concerning situations.

Pat is right--there are some treatment options out there for very early stage endometrial problems. Your first step will be to have that D & C. Once you have that information, it becomes easier to make choices because you can focus your information-searching techniques and your questions.

I have read from some women that they used progesterone prometrium or Megace) successfully to treat hyperplasia with atypia. I did a search for you (I didn't pour through all the threads for content, I only searched for threads containing hyperplasia and atypia), and here's the link to that list of threads:

Also, if by some unfortunate chance your D & C would show true cancer, please request to see a gynecologic oncologist. THey are the experts when it comes to female cancers and they know all the current treatment techniques and surgical procedures.

I just read your posting. I too had hyperplasia. But I had complex cells, along with fibroids and ovarian cysts.

I have been thru 2 D & Cs with 3 months of progesterine between, and 4 vaginal sonograms over an 8 month period.
I did not have any problems with the D&C. I found it to be an easy procedure. But be sure to rest for a few days. The 1st time I did too much too soon and started bleeding. The 2nd time I really rested for 2/3 days and had no immediate bleeding.

Since I'm 55 and was still getting my period, after much research and finding this site I decided to have the hyst. The other option presented to me was watchful waiting. But that included more D&Cs or endometrial biopsies and more sonograms on a regular basis to make sure that the complex cells hadn't changed to atypia or cancer. It is an individual decision and you need to weigh all your options, do your research and make the decision that is best for you.

I also had hyperplasia. In the beginning, I had decided to go for the thermal ablation. Then, in my blood work the pathologist found I had hyperplasia, so couldn't have the procedure. My Dr. then did a D&C and hysteroscopy (looked around). From that they found out I had endometrial cancer. I had my hysterectomy a few weeks later and they found it was in the very early stages; 1B, grade 2. Sounds like a good idea to get the D&C done so they can take a look. It may be nothing. Hyperplasia doesn't always mean cancer. Don't worry about the D&C. After mine I felt so great. I had just felt run down because I was anemic from all the previous heavy bleeding. I kept mentioning to DH that I wondered if the Dr. had actually done one because I wasn't in any pain, although I took my pain pills for a few days, cause I didn't want any pain. LOL Anyway, only spotted very little, for maybe a week. I just thought I'd be having some kind of pain down there. Now, I am just so thankful that they caught mine early.

Take care and try not to worry. I know that is the hardest part. I think I nearly worried myself to death over it. Everything happened so quickly, just a couple of months.
