1 week post hysterectomy - cramping

Well it has been one week since my laproscopic hysterectomy, kept my ovaries and I feel pretty good.

However, I do have waves of what feel like cramping, but there isn't a uterus to cause it?

Re: cramping

Hi GuinessDoll.
It might be normal? Everyone varies, and it would depend on the location and how sever the cramping is. I know I had some mild off and on (less than my regular period cramps-no need for pain meds) cramping. My doc told me that was normal, as the muscles and other organs and nerves all wake up and start healing.

Mine lasted about 4 weeks? And even now at a little over 2 months I get the odd cramp, but now it is usually around the time I would have had my period.

If it seems to often or too painful, I would certainly call your doctor to see what they say. Never hurts to err on the side of caution after major surgery!

*hugs*

The cramping could be coming from your intestinal tract; it rearranges itself to fill the space left by your uterus, and can be stimulated by the same prostaglandins that would stimulate your period. Ibuprofen inhibits prostaglandin activity, so ask your doctor about taking that. Also try supplementing your diet with magnesium, which relaxes the involuntary muscles in there, so they don't contract so forcefully; food sources include leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate. Best wishes for your continued recovery!
