Starting week 6 post hysterectomy and still having gas and poop pain. what gives
Hello fellow HysterSisters! This is my first post. I had a Laparoscopic Robotic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy and I was able to keep both of my ovaries. I have quickly come to the understanding that everyone is different on their road to recovery. Mine has been a little rough. I over did it a few times by simply sitting too long so I had a setback. Now I am really in tune with my body and listening. If I start to feel a little pressure or get tired I leave my office to go home and lay down. However, one thing that has stayed consistent and I am starting to become concerned is I can feel (and not in a good way) gas and poop passing through my intestines. It is a quick but sharp and piercing pain. I am 5 going on 6 week post op and still having these issues. It isn’t constipation because one I go it is totally normal. I plan on asking my DR about it when I go in 6/8 but was curious if anyone else had this problem this far out.

Re: Startin week 6 and still having gas and poop pain. what gives
I just had surgery Tuesday, so I'm no expert by any means, but I started taking magnesium and gas x after I had a horrible gas pain Wednesday night and haven't had any pain since. I guess magnesium helps with cramping of any kind.

Re: Startin week 6 and still having gas and poop pain. what gives
Regardless of the type of surgery, there is a lot of internal healing and adjustment taking place and some women experience bladder and/or bowel issues. I had pain with BM's through the 6th week and then in the 7th week they magically went away. Years ago I was bothered by IBS and the stress of the surgery for me, kicked it off again and I had a lot of cramping and gas and diarreah for several months after the surgery. If that is a system that is susceptible to
stress for you, you might experience the same thing. Also if your ovaries are functioning the cyclical release of hormones can increase prostaglandins which the smooth muscle of the intestines is responsive to. Did you ever have diarreah right before your period started? The same substance that caused uterine cramping can also cause bowel cramping. An anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen might help if you notice a cyclical cramping in the future. Hope this helps. Recovery is a slow process and you'll still feel odd twinges every once in awhile.

Starting week 6 post hysterectomy and still having gas and poop pain. what gives
It's perfectly normal to feel stuff moving through your intestinal tract; I feel it all the time, especially at the left corner of my colon, and going down the left side. Kavlaq is right; magnesium works by relaxing your muscles, including the smooth muscles in the intestinal tract. Food sources include leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate. To help to move the gas through, be sure to take regular walks; also try peppermint tea or fennel seeds. Also try minimizing or avoiding common "gas bombs," including legumes, onions and garlic, cruciferous vegetables, cucumbers, melons, pears, and artificial sweeteners. Also try massaging your abdomen, starting at the right hip, moving up to the waist, across your belly button to the left side, then down and across, back to the starting point. This follows the path of your colon, which should help to move the gas through. Best wishes for your continued recovery!
