Intolerable pain day after surgery, mainly on right kidney/lower back area

Wow..Im so grateful to have this site. It really helped me to prepare as much as possible. I had a TVH on Monday the 12th. Came home on the 14th, due to intolerable pain the day after surgery. Mainly on the right kidney/lower back area. Has anyone else experienced this? Im still on 2 percocet every 4 hours and 1 toradol every 6 hours. I also still have not had a BM, although ive been eating well, but just doesnt seem like things want to start moving again. Could the pain be due to that?

Gosh, I am sorry your recovery is starting off so rocky.

The pain killers can cause constipation. Check with your doc and see if you can take something like milk of magnesia. That might help if you are allowed to use it.

I had alot of pain right after surgery. The morphine was NOT enough. Like you, I also ended up getting toradol. But, the pain slowly subsided and I didnt need the toradol once I came home. Then I slowly weaned myself off of the narcotics and started using more motrin.

Big hugs, good luck with your recovery! And remember,

With surgery I developed muscle spasms in the right lowback/flank area. Still comes and goes better with moist heat or cold pack. Worst if I do not change positions often enough better if I lye with my legs up on pillows (height varies) or on my side. If you look at the list of articles there is one on post op exercises some of those may help also but be slow and gentle. Constipation or untreated UTI can cause pain in that region also.

Good Luck
