Emotional rollercoaster pre-surgery

My surgery is on November 1 - I don't know WHAT is going on, but I've been on the verge of tears since Friday. Nothing in particular is going wrong in my life right now, but I just cannot pull it together. I'm more depressed than I can ever remember, but I can't figure out why. I'm pms'ing right now, but it's never ever been this emotional. I usually get a little impatient and frustrated, but not weepy. Literally since Friday, I just feel like going home, getting under the covers, and sobbing my heart out. I'm an executive assistant, and every time someone asks me to do something, I just want to cry. Some of my girlfriends are saying "I bet you can't wait - this is going to be great - you're going to feel so much better afterwards - it'll be amazing to be pain-free" - and while they're right, somehow what they're saying is just making it worse. Has anybody experienced this a week before surgery? I feel like I'm losing my mind!

Re: Emotional rollercoaster pre-surgery

Artswife - thank you - that made me feel less insane I'm not consciously thinking about my surgery, so it's a little confusing to me. I started crying at my pottery class last night because I wasn't able to center my clay LOL. And this morning, I couldn't print my boss's calendar because my computer kept crashing. He got a little annoyed, and I went into the ladies room to try to keep from crying at my desk! I don't like this one little bit, but it's so good to know that I'm not alone. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow!! Hugs!!!

Re: Emotional rollercoaster pre-surgery

It's very common, even if you know having the surgery is the right thing to do, to be very emotional for a bit pre-surgery. It is a big surgery and it is frightening.

However, once you start being without pain (several weeks post-op), you will feel like an enormous weight is lifted off of you. So, look forward to that. In the meantime, get your house in order, get out with your friends and have some fun.

Re: Emotional rollercoaster pre-surgery

I had such pre-op jitters too. The waiting is the worst. I worked right up to the day before surgery and for me it was the best thing as it helped keep me busy. When I left work on my last day I couldn't say goodbye to my co-workers as I was way too emotional. It's a stressful time for us. Yes, we will feel better after but first we gotta get to the other side, recovery!!

Please remember its ok and very normal to be nervous and emotional. We've all been there!!!!! Taking long hot showers helped me when I was stressed as did calming music at bedtime.

Take care!

Re: Emotional rollercoaster pre-surgery

Dear AlmostFree, I am home from surgery and let me tell you, it is amazing! I do have aches and pains and be careful of the pain pills because they will make you think you are capable of doing much more than you should! That is my only warning! There is some light cramping and twinges here and there, but all in all it is a vast improvement from pre-op. The hospital stay was short and simple. No sleep due to constant interruptions from nurses trying to do their jobs, lol. Once I got home and slept I was very pleased with my attitude and outlook. Also, I was weepy from the anesthesia coming out of my system or the hormone drop off? It was humorous actually. I found myself weeping openly at an episode of Beyond Scared Straight. Once I thought about it a minute and put together the circumstances for my crying jag I found myself actually laughing. What a fine line, huh? Well, here's my advice....please don't fool yourself into doing too much because it is very easy to do. Get up and on you feet walking around, but please leave the carrying and vacuuming and other things you used to do for someone who hasn't had their guts moved around and some of them even removed altogether. You may feel pretty good but once you overdo it you will feel like total poo. It takes quite a lot of rest to recover once you realize you have done too much and you can even undo some of the good work your Dr. did. You have gone through just the beginning of this long walk, don't create bumps in the road to boot. Thinking of you and I will be praying for you Rock on sister!

Re: Emotional rollercoaster pre-surgery

My surgery is Nov 2nd and I feel almost the same way. I am not really depressed, but have been very emotional. It doesn't help that I got my period this past week so hormones are contributing to my weepiness as well. The scariest thing for me was a few days ago when I had a panic attack that came out of NOWHERE. I wasn't even really thinking about my surgery but WHAM! panic attack. I have issues with anxiety and whatnot but it's been months since I had a panic attack so it really took me by surprise because I was just sitting at home doing nothing when it happened.

Hang in there! We will get through this!
