D&C on Wednesday

Hi Everyone,
First I must say I thank everyone for this site. On August 27th I found out I needed a mammogram and an ultrasound. I got my mammogram results back already-NO CANCER!! Boy was I happy. The ultrasound showed many, many fibroids and I have been having alot of pressure on my bladder. I will have a D&C on Wednesday, the outcome will more than likely be a hysterectomy. Does one have to wait along time until the procedure is done? I just want it over and done with. My hormones have been in overdrive for many years now. What tests have to be done before surgery? Do they generally try to shrink the fibroids and if so how long does that take? My largest is 8.6 cm. Since November I have lost 25 pounds and couldn't understand why I wasn't losing my stomach. Now I know why-no matter how many abdominal excercises I do my stomach won't go away as long as I have these pesky fibroids. The other question I have is what is the best way to go-vaginal or abdominal incision? I have never had children and I don't know if that makes a difference or not. Sorry to ramble on and thanks again to everyone.

D&C on Wednesday

Many times insurance will ask for other procedures to be tried before proceding with a hyst. This is major surgery, and is not without possible risks. Some of the women here have opted for less invasive procedures, for some this has worked, and for others it bought them some time before having to proceed with the hyst.

The type of procedure you will have done depends on the doctor you have, and the size of your fibroids. Some doctors prescribe different treatment methods to try and shrink the fibroids prior to surgery. For some women this has been a wait of 3-6 months.

Have you had a second opinion? This is something that is strongly recommended prior to surgery. Some doctors are not skilled in vaginal or laproscopic procedures and will only perform a TAH. Still others, are more in favor of less invasive procedures such as myomectomy. Here is a link that discuss many different options and alternatives available to women.

D&C on Wednesday

Hi Robin,
I haven't had a second opinion. My Dr. did suggest other alternatives to the hysterectomy. I just have so many fibroids and 2 are very large and I don't want to have to deal with them growing back. I take the BCP to regulate my periods and I read that the estrogen from them makes the fibroids grow. The pressure on my bladder is getting unbearable & I have lower back pain. There is also a cyst on my left ovary that I suppose the Dr. will be able to look at on Wednesday, when I have my D&C.
I thank you for your response, I have learned so much from this site. Everyone is just so nice here and I appreciate all the help.
Have a wonderful day.
