Contemplating Hyster after Cervical Cancer

Hi there,

It's recently been recommended that I have a total hysterectomy. Last year I was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the crevix - non invasive. I was very lucky that a Cone Surgery was all that was needed at the time. Now I go back for biopsies every 6 months. These are invasive, uncomfortable (ouch), and stressful. Apparently I have very little cervical integrity left which could lead to problems with evaluations down the road. I am absolutely terrified of having a hysterectomy but I don't want to let fear influence my decision. I'm curious as to any ladies choosing a hysterectomy post cervical issues and what was the motivating factor/outcome.

Cheers and thanks!

Re: Contemplating Hyster after Cervical Cancer

Hi There.

I am in the same situation as you. I had cone biopsy 2 1/2 years ago, and have been left with huges scaring over my cervix (well whats left of them). Due to this scarring my cervix have closed over and which has made my period extremly painful and the flow next to nothing.. Another problem this causes is it is near impossible to get a smear from inside the cervix. In march this year i had a dialation done, this relieved my issue for about twomonths but it has now closed up again. I went back to see the specialist last month and was told my only other option was a hysterectomy. I had an ultrasoundof my pelvis this week so i guess it is just a wailing game to see what the reults are of that. They wanted to see if the flow back from my period over the last two years has caused any other damage. Im still yet to make my mind up.

Re: Contemplating Hyster after Cervical Cancer

Hi Misseymoe,

It's such a tough decision isn't it! I feel like I am beginning to have some of the same issues you are having now that I am one year out since my cone. My latest biopsy last week was cancer free but I am now more worried about my cervix closing off than the cancer. I guess this is why they rec the hyster for gals like us.

Keep me posted on what the U/S says. Hoping the best for you.

Cheers.

Re: Contemplating Hyster after Cervical Cancer

Hi Vintagegal

Had my specialist app yesterday. Was good and bad. Results from untra sound was good. Show no damage from the flow back of my periods. Specialist have me 3 options. #1 to take medication to stop me from having periods, which in turn stops the pain, however long term use can have undesired side effects, #2 an abdominal hysterectomy to remove uterus and cervix. I would get to keep my ovarys. Cant have a laproscopic or vaginal one as i done have any cervix left persay for him to grab. #3 to continue the way things are control it with pain meds as i need.
So there you have it. I am still in two minds what to do. I know my period is only once a month but the pain is pretty bad. even ith pain meds. but he certainly didnt paint a pretty picture about surgery. All the complications alone are enough to scare anyone.
I am now on the waiting list for a hysterectomy. Could be about 4 - 6 months. So i have some time still to get my head around it.

Hope things are well for you.

Re: Contemplating Hyster after Cervical Cancer

Hi Missymoe,

I totally understand your fears. Fear keeps me from scheduling this surgery as well. I have found that I do trust my Dr. completely and that helps me make the decision. I still have time so no need to rush my surgery.

I wish I could offer more words of wisdom. I think that with these circumstances we need to try and quiet our heads and sit with all of our options until you find the one that feels right.

Sending you lot's of good thoughts!!
