should I have a hysterectomy for adenomyosis?

I had a MRI a year ago which showed adenomyosis. It explained all the symptoms I've been having. I am scheduled for a abdominal hysterectomy in June and very unsure what to do or if this is the right choice. Worried about hormones. I've never been able to take any hormones--they give me mirgaines. Would be glad for any advice anyone could give me.

Sorry you're feeling confused. I too have adenomyosis which was suspected during my lap and confirmed by MRI last month. I am also having a hysterectomy but only my uterus and cervix removed because that is what needs to be removed for the adeno. I am keeping my ovaries even though I do have endo but my surgeon believes most of my symptoms and complaints are due to the uterus. Are you having your ovaries removed?

yes, I am having everything removed. My dr is willing to leave me an ovary, but feels that I should have everything taken out because of all the pain I have. I had a lap about 10 years ago with a lot of adhesions on my bowels and she feels that I will continue to have problems if she leaves me an ovary.

So do you have endo also? I am pretty new to all of this so I'm trying to figure things out too. They did find some endo with me but it wasn't alot I guess so I think that's why my doctor feels I should keep my ovaries. They're in good condition. I was struggling with whether or not to have my ovaries removed but he said not to because I'm 38 and it would mean alot of years on HRT?? I don't know. It's all very confusing.
However, if you do have alot of pain and you feel confident with your surgeon and her suggestions then I think you should definitely have the procedure done. If not then maybe get a second opinion.

I don't know if it is the adenomyosis or the endo, but it seems like a lot of years left to live with the pain and misery and Ihave really heavy periods that last for ever and my cycles are 21-28 days, so I feel like my life revolves around my female problems. I am so torn about what to do about my ovaries, you read something and it makes you think one way and I read something else and it i the opposite. I had a second opinion, and that physician also felt that I needed to have the ovaries removed, but she also said that sometimes having the uterus removed is enough, but I am having abdominal surgery, I sure don't want to go through this again in 2 or 3 years if I don't have to, so it is so hard to decide.

I sympathize with you. It is a very hard decision to make and everyone is unique and has a unique situation so it's so hard to give advice sometimes. It seems as though the best solution for you would be to remove everything and try to salvage an ovary if possible.
I just had my first lap 2 months ago and they removed the bit of endo that they saw and some scar tissue. My concern is if I don't remove the ovaries too then I may be facing some surgery again in my future. On the other hand, I also believe most of my issues are with the adenomyosis so I figure one step at a time and I'll cross that bridge when I have to. Good luck with your decision.

My hyster was due to adenomyosis as well. I also had abdominal. I am now almost 4 weeks post op and feeling great! Still just a tiny bit swollen but minimally. I will be completely honest and tell you though that I had a tremendous amount of pain. And I've had 2 c-secions that I did great with with very minimal pain afterward. My doctor warned me the pain would be worse and he was right. However the worst of it was over in the first week. Don't mean to scare you but want to be honest. My doctor left my ovaries, therefore no need to take hormones and no risk of osteoporosis. Ask your doc if he can let your ovaries in. It's always hard to know if you're making the right choice to have the hysterectomy. I prayed about it alot, and I trust my doctor so much. Now 4 weeks later I'm feeling almost back to myself. Think hard about leaving your ovaries. If they do need to come out after a few years that could be something they could probably just do laprascopicly. I'm only 30. I would rather try to leave them and possibly never have to take hormones. Even if I can go 10-20 years without having to take them that would be a huge positive for me. Keep you in my prayers. My doctor told me once that all of the tests he was ordering for me (Vaginal ultrasounds, catscan, MRI, etc) were mainly to prove to the insurance company that something was wrong and they were trying all methods available to prove a diagnosis. Maybe that was a load of crock, I don't know but it kind of makes sense. You can't just be diagnosed with something without the doctor ever doing anything....

Since you are trying to decide what is best for you, I would highly recommend seeking a second opinion! Since you do have endometriosis, you may want to consider seeing an endometriosis specialist.

A hysterectomy is a major, irreversible surgery that is not without risks so all of your pros and cons should be weighed so you know you are doing what is right for you!

I have endo and suspected adeno. My endo specialist has said as an option, since these issues are fed byestrogen, removing my remaining ovary is a better option then having a hyster, less chance of further problems and though hyster does resolve adeno, this condition resolves after menopause anyway which is what will happen with ovary removal, and a hyster does not resolve endo, only excision does and with removing the ovary should stop it from continuing to grow also.
