dVH/RALH Bowel concerns after hysterectomy and small bowel resection

Am 3 days postop Total and BSO. Dr. Said he had to also do a minor bowel reaection due to some scarred areas.

Have not had a BM. Drinking lots of water and walking 5 minutes almost every hour. Taking stool softener. When should I call the Dr. About not being able to have a BM?

I had to do stool softener and dulcolax and peppermint tea.I was 4dpo for first very small bowel movement and 5dpo for a regular one.I had one ovary adhered to my colon so it felt like all the muscles down there were mad and didn't want to loosen up.I would call the doctor at 5 days probably if it is too uncomfortable. Did you do a bowel prep before surgery? I didn't have too.Because if you were empty to start it might take you a little longer. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, I did the bowel prep...good point about it may take longer. I am only taking colace. Tomorrow maybe I will also try dulcolax. Thanks again.

I agree, 3 days is still pretty early on, so not something to be worried about quite yet unless it's causing you pain. You're probably not eating a huge amount of food right now either, so your bowel probably isn't very full yet.

I was really worried about that for my surgery as well because I have IBS. So I used prunes and prune juice to keep things moving and it really helped. (Though keep in mind they can cause a lot of gas, which is really not fun at all.) Stool softeners also take a few days to fully kick in.

Happy to say that late last night I had a BM and another this morning.

Since I had painful BMs pre surgery due to endo this was actually less painful.
