3 days post hysterectomy: Can't poop! Cramping when I pee! In toilet hell!

Hi all,

Had my abdominal laparoscopic hysterectomy on Friday April 29. I was slightly constipated before surgery and have had no signs of life (other than passing gas) from my colon. It feels heavy and sluggish inside and I know I would feel so much better if could just poop. I have tried prune juice, dulcolax, yogurt, coffee, dairy, fiber etc. to get things moving. Barely a rumble.

On top of this I think my bladder is badly bruised. It hurts to push my muscles when I pee, especially towards the end where I am about to empty it. I am concerned about getting a uti. Going to try to drink more to flush my system. Any tips would be awesome.

Try to walk as much as you can and drink lots of water, that can help

In addition to regular walking to get things moving, try peppermint tea. Also try supplementing your diet with magnesium, which promotes proper bowel function, and can also help to ease the cramping in your urinary tract; food sources include leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate. Try making a smoothie with almond milk, cherries, spinach, and ground flaxseeds; that's what ultimately worked for me. I would also recommend a probiotic supplement, or regular servings of live culture yogurt, to restore the normal balance of bacteria inside your intestinal tract, which may have been upset by the surgical antibiotics. Best wishes for your continued recovery!

Ouch!

I second the walking and drinking, drinking, drinking.

The first several weeks, urinating was very painful for me. I would get an intense ache in my back when I needed to urinate, without any other signal that I needed to go. I had problems with flow for a good two weeks. I was so glad when that nonsense finally stopped!

Another thing that helps with the BMs is proper position on the toilet. You might consider using a step stool under the toilet, or even investing in a Squatty Potty. I used a step stool during my recovery - and it worked so great and ended my ongoing problems with hemmorhoids, I'm still using it, and now my husband is, too.

Good luck to you and allow your body the time and space it needs to heal!

Re: 3 days post hysterectomy: Can't poop! Cramping when I pee! In toilet hell!

My doctor said it would be day five or six before I go. But on day five I was in terrible cramping pain from not going. I tried suppository and small over the counter enammas. Neither worked. Not to worry emergency room doctors are familiar with this issue. I haven't had an issue since then. So just try to relax and Stay away from dairy.

I feel your pain. I'm one week post op and thought I was going to die trying to poop. The pain was horrendous. I even threw up. Doc said to try a gentle lax.
