The bottom line is your Dr should have been very clear about what he was going to do.

Re: I'm angry about my cervix being removed
I had my surgery on 11/13/13. Total hysterectomy, my doc took ovaries, tubes, uterus, and cervix. I will be 41 in Feb. and my vagina is lubricating just fine. I am taking hormone replacement so I do not go into menopause. Your ovaries will get back to normal that is if they worked right in the first place. Mine never did so I am super glad they took those things out during surgery. My cervix being gone hasn't hurt my desire it has actually heightened my sexuality. The wind blows now and I feel like a teenage boy lol. My poor husband always had to work hard to get the motor running if you know what I mean. Not anymore! He is not going to know what to do when we are released from the doctor. I hope it gets better for you. I am keeping positive thoughts and not worrying about what bad can happen. Keep your chin up sister.

Re: I'm angry about my cervix being removed
I had a LAVH and, therefore, had my cervix removed. My doctor didn't tell me, but I did know that with a vaginal hysterectomy, the cervix is removed. Let me start off by telling you that I have a wonderful sex life without my cervix. The cervix is not what is responsible for vaginal lubrication. That is the job of the ovaries. Since I also lost my ovaries, I depend on hormone replacement therapy for moisture. Second, there is no consensus among doctors as to whether keeping the cervix does anything at all to prevent prolapse. Some believe it does, some think it doesn't. I know we have had members who have retained their cervix and experienced prolapse after surgery, and we have members with no cervix who have had no more problems with prolapse. So far there is just no definitive data to support either side. As for desire, that has nothing to do with the cervix either. That is a hormonal thing as well, so that again is a job of the ovaries or your HRT. The one time women really miss their cervix is if during sex, they enjoy having the cervix bumped. My cervix was never my friend, and having it bumped hurt. I don't miss mine, but others miss that sensation.
Yes, it would be better if doctors went out of their way to explain your surgical plan in detail, but, in my experience, they do not. I have had several surgeries now, and what I've learned is that no matter what you are having done, even if it's just getting an antibiotic for infection, ask questions. You and you alone are your own best advocate as a healthcare consumer. Always ask why that treatment. What are other options? What are the risks? What can I expect? Get a copy of your medical records and tests and keep them. More than once, I have had a doctor overlook a prescription or condition that I have to remind them about. Before a procedure, tell the doctor what you believe will be done (don't ever assume) and ask if you are right. I never go to any doctor without a pen and paper in my hand, and write down questions and answers. And before you have ANY surgery, if at all possible get a second opinion. All doctors are not equal, and you have to find someone you can work with. And as many have discovered, research your condition so you walk in being an informed consumer and patient.
Here are a few articles that may help inform this discussion:
cervix and intimacy
cervix and pelvic organ support
second opinions

I wish you the best, and I hope this helps!

Re: I'm angry about my cervix being removed
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with dryness. You are only 2 1/2 weeks post-op and this is early in your recovery. It might be that your ovaries are not "awake" yet, and it takes some time. I had a similar situation around the same time, but the lubrication has returned to normal.
Be patient, rest, and take care of yourself in order for you to heal properly. Things will begin to get better. Wishing you well and sending you gentle hugs.

Re: I'm angry about my cervix being removed
I'm so sorry the doctor didn't tell you they were removing your cervix. I actually told my dr I didn't want my cervix removed and he asked "why not?" I asked "why?". Had I not asked, I'd be in the same situation as you. Your post is informing others, and that's great. Your doctor was wrong not to fully inform you.
I hope your sex life remains awesome. I hear a lot of it is our attitudes towards it. My surgery was only 4 days ago and I am abstaining till my wedding in 6 months, so I'm hoping my sex drive is what it was in my first marriage. Time will tell, but I'm working on keeping my attitiude positive.
You're in my prayers.

Re: I'm angry about my cervix being removed
If it helps, when I had my surgery, my cervix was removed along with everything else. I have had absolutely no problems with lubrication, have not had to use anything to help things. I hope your recovery goes smoothly from here on out.

I'm angry about my cervix being removed
Hi!! I am 31 years, mother of five in 3 pregnancies, had 2 sets of twins. Had tubes tied in 2008 but bleeding and other major pains made me go into surgery. The doctor said my uterus was extremely large from the two twin pregnancies(both were full term). I had my uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix removed. I specifically asked if my cervix would stay in if nothing was wrong. I was concerned about my sex drive. But the doctor said its normally routine and it serves no function because its the opening to the uterus. Also she told me I could still have a period in keeping the cervix and would still have to have annual pap smears so I told her by all means take it out. I think I made the right decision. I'm only post op a little over a week so I can't tell any victory stories yet but in the long run I think its a good decision to get it taken with your uterus although I can understand your frustration. They should have told you they were taking it first...
