No Ins Here Either...Found Help!

Hi there, I also have no ins and had to have a cone procedure on 11/08 and now have to have a hyst on 12/05, I understand your worry. However I found help in the hospital. Where I will be going is a School of medicine, so they offer what is called "Charity Care". You fill out an application, give them last years tax papers and a ton of info...they look it over and decide if you are eligable. Thank GOD I was....so now they pay for everything except precrition medication, that I have to have once I am sent home. Maybe you need to call the hospital and ask to speak to someone in the finacial area. I will be praying for you and hope that you too will find relief soon from this worry! Good luck with all your medical procedures.

Kelli,

What is your reason for having a hysterectomy? If you have a major tumor, it could be very dangerous to put off not dealing with the situation, because then you will still not have insurance to cover the cost, and you could wind up being very ill, which would mean a personal cost to you not only in terms of spending but in terms of quality of life. Resolving those problems with a hysterectomy could mean that you'd be more well to deal with things, or even find some additional work to pay back the cost.

The normal charges for a hysterectomy are about $20,000, but most insurance companies discount them to about $14,000. So one thing you could do is to negotiate a "cash price" with a hospital.

Major hospitals will usually allow you to set up a payment plan, such as $500 a month, or perhaps if your husband has a good job you could get a credit card (or several small ones) to pay for the cost up front on a credit card, then work after the surgery to pay back the amount you charged.

Hopefully you would feel better after the surgery to be able to work to pay it back, whereas postponing it is likely to be more costly and also more of a danger permanently to your health.

Kelli,

I have no insurance either, and the hospital does charity but you have to exhaust all other options first. So I applied for state medical coupons. I qualified under a program for the temporarily disablied and unable to work. I also get a small cash grant to pay bills. Contact your local Dept. of Social and Health services, Health Dept. or Family Services. Also the hospital or even the financial dept at your doctor's office may know of agencies to contact. Good luck, I know this adds even more stress to the whole situation, which feels unsurmountable.

With my prayers, Becca

Oh I almost forgot. If you need the hyst for cancer reasons contact your local cancer foundation. Another option is if you have a Planned Parenthood in your area. They know about a lot of programs to help with these types of things
