6 days post hysterectomy - so constipated

Its been 4 hours I've been trying to go. I stayed on top of pain meds. BUT stool softener hit and miss. NO need for pain med tonight
IM doing good now. But i need to empty gut so been waiting for stool softener to kick in. Wont go to bed till done. Been drinking water for hours now . THis is worst then the uncomfortable incisions. I even have a bigger incison on the right since they took appendix too. (That was s surprise )

Re: so constipated

I would highly recommend magnesium citrate. You can get it at the local pharmacy or grocery store. It is a disgusting drink but it will work. I have used it after each of my surgeries (I am up to 11 now...) and it works like a charm. It may cause some gas pains until you have a movement, but it does work. Good luck!

I would recommend speaking to your doctor or pharmacist before trying the magnesium citrate. You can also get magnesium from foods like leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, dark chocolate, or a good qulaity supplememt. Try making a smoothie with almond milk, cherries, spinach, and ground flaxseeds; that's what ultimately got things moving for me. Also take regular walks, and have some peppermint tea. As for sitting on the toilet, trying to go, my doctor recommends doing it right after a meal; this stimulates the gastro-colic reflex, in which the stomach tells the brain that it's full, then the brain tells the colon to empty its contents, to make room for the new stuff coming in. And bend your knees into your chest; this straightens the rectum, so the stool passes more easily. Best wishes for your continued recovery!

Re: 6 days post hysterectomy - so constipated

I am with you. 5 days post op and haven't gone. I took stool softeners around the clock and magnesium. I am also a vegetarian so I pushed the raw veggies and healthy foods. Yesterday I added Mirilax and took it again today. Will add in Milk of Magnesia, per the doctor's orders today. I feel like it must be making my pain worse? And I am also scared that it will be painful when I actually go!!!
