Tape burn?

I had my 2 week appointment last Friday and was released to drive! Yay!
My incision is healing well, but I have a large blister on my belly that has popped and is now an open, oozy wound. It looks like a regular blister, but is very large. On the day of my appointment it was still covered by skin, and the Doc. called it a tape burn, but now the skin has rubbed off and left an open tender area. I called the Doc. but have not heard back yet, today is his surgery day. Has anyone else had this issue? It is oozing on my clothes and I am thinking I probably need to cover it with gauze, but not sure if I should be using an ointment or something on it as well. Any Ideas until I hear from the Doc.?
Thanks,

Re: Tape burn?

Heard from the Doctors office. The nurse told me I should use a teflon pad and neosporin, and try to keep it dry. I got paper tape, since the tape used during surgery probably caused the blister to begin with. This blister bothers me worse than my tender insides or my incision right now. By the way, I drove myself to the pharmacy! That little taste of freedom felt good!

Re: Tape burn?

That's what I was gonna suggest! Polysporin and cover it... I hope it gets better soon!

Re: Tape burn?

You might have an allergy to the adhesive in the tape. If you ever have surgery again or any other reason to be taped, be sure to let them know so they can use the kind that's less likely to trigger the problem. Paper tape is usually better, but in some people, a hypo-allergenic tape is needed.

Hope it heals quickly!

Re: Tape burn?

I am allergic to "rosins" - what my hospital called the adhesive on most tapes. The only types I can deal with are paper tape and Tegaderm (the clear plastic bandage thingy they put over your IV site).

My allergic reaction makes the area red at the least when I remove the tape; I also have a scarred area next to my one incision site from tape that I used to cover the infected area for a day or two. I got a similar "tape burn" to you.

I hope yours heals better than mine!

Best wishes...

Re: Tape burn?

Hi! I had the same thing happen to me, It was the steri-strips. The doctor gave me a burn cream and told me to take Benedryl. It will scar if it isn't taken care of, just like Bandimal said. Once I could remove the strips it took about a week before they started to heal. No scar for me, thank goodness, but you are right, so painful when it happens.

Re: Tape burn?

The burn was not healing well so I went to my primary care Doc yesterday. He said the blister is essentially a second degree burn probably caused by pulling tape off of my sensitive skin. He said wash daily with soap and water and use polysporin and only cover with clean underwear, no gauze or telfa pad. I had previously been told to keep it dry, use Neosporin and cover with telfa pad, and it seemed to be getting worse. Just one day after changing my wound care I have seen significant healing! Just another reason to get a "second opinion" if you are not happy with what you were told the first time around!

Re: Tape burn?

I feel ya.....the clear bandages they put over my incision blistered me something awful and when they took them off pulled all my skin off...I agree, they bothered me more than my incisions also. It was awful. I tried covering them up til they essentially got the first layer of skin on them, but I guess it keeps it too moist to really heal, and then the itching started. Then I went back to the doc and I had another severe reaction to the steri strips...he gave me a really strong topical cream and antibiotics. If you go to walmart right around where they have the vitamin e, they have a vitamin e stick, looks like a lipstick tube, I have been putting that on, works great, cuts down on itching and hopefully reduces the scares...I think where the blisters where are going to scar. The areal that I had blister was like a three by three, so not pretty. I do feel for you and everyone else that had an allergic reaction, I hope we all get better very soon.
