What's normal and what's next?
I'm 66 with vaginal bleeding - went to gyn last week - was put through testing incl biopsy - measurement of uterine wall was 24mm. My follow up appt. is in 3 days - am a nervous wreck - I'd like to know what to expect next. No friends or family have dealt with this. Thanks.

Re: What's normal and what's next?
I was 55 - almost four years past menopause - when I had some vaginal bleeding that sent me to my GP. She ordered an ultrasound and referred me to a gynecologist for an endometrial biopsy.
The maximum thickness of the endometrial lining for post-menopausal women is supposed to be 5 mm. Mine was 9 mm. 24 mm is definitely getting up there. Endometrial hyperplasia (pre-cancer) or cancer is unfortunately a real possibility, hence the biopsy to get cell sample to send to a pathology lab.
If it turns out that you have either cancer or hyperplasia with atypia, then your gyn is likely to recommend that you have a hysterectomy and have your ovaries and tubes removed at the same time. They'll probably refer you to a gynecological oncologist for the surgery.
If it turns out that you have a lower-risk form of hyperplasia, with no atypia present, then you may be offered the option of treating it with a progestin such as Provera. You can always try the Provera and if it doesn't work out for you, then elect to have a hysterectomy.
In my case, it turned out that I had grade 2/3 endometrial cancer. I saw a gyn oncologist for a a consult three weeks later and had surgery seven weeks after that. The cancer was caught at a very early stage, stage 1A. This is typical for endometrial cancer, as it's symptomatic in the early stages. It announces that it's there, so to speak.
For contrast, my mother had some vaginal bleeding when she was 79. It turned out that she had complex hyperplasia *without* atypia. Due to other health issues, she was a poor surgical candidate. Instead, she was put on quarterly Depo-Provera injections. Mom lived another five years and when her time came to pass on, it was *not* due to cancer.

Re: What's normal and what's next?
My mom just went through something like this. I am not saying it will be the same for you, but this is what happened. She is 73 I do not remember how thick her uterine lining was but she had a polyp that was discovered on an ultrasound/sonogram. They did do a biopsy on the lining to see if it was cancerous.....it was not. In the end she had a D&C to clean out her uterus and check out the polyp...it was not cancerous either. She went to the hospital for the D&C at 7:30 in the morning and was home by noon. A little groggy for the day, but then all was well after that.
I hope this helps you. Good luck.

Re: What's normal and what's next?
Something similar happened to a friend of mine. She was about 60 at the time. She didn't have any bleeding, but an ultrasound she had for other reasons indicated that her uterine lining was quite thick.
It turned out that her uterine lining was fine, not thickened at all and certainly not malignant. What she had was a great huge - and benign - polyp that filled the uterine cavity. The size of it had confused the ultrasound.

Re: What's normal and what's next?
Hi! I was post menopausal about 2 years and started spotting. My gyn was not able to get a biopsy in office so I had a D&C in the hospital. I was put on Prometrium and initially it worked to stop the spotting. After a few years the bleeding came back with a vengeance, I had a second D&C and was put back on the Prometrium. However this time it did nothing and I was referred to a gyn/onc for surgery. I had surgery in August and thankfully the pathology was negative for cancer. The diagnostic process is nerve wracking, please don't feel alone, we are here to answer your questions.
