Question about colon prep day before surgery

My doc is one that has you do a colon prep with some over the counter laxatives. He gave out a paper that has what times to take which meds the day before surgery. I forgot to ask anything about food. He didn't say anything, and the paper doesn't. I was just told by the nurse scheduling the surgery not to eat 12 hours before the surgery, but nothing was said about the day before.

It seems weird to me to eat normal AND do the bowel prep. I'm certainly going to be hungry. Do I have dinner the night before, even though I've been taking the prep meds during the day?

I have to be on a liquid diet the day before surgery,with an enema around 7pm. Nothing by mouth that I have to cut or chew. Then nothing after midnight.

I would assume you need clear liquids the day before (I did)--but you'd better check to be sure. It would be a bummer if they cancelled surgery over a diet mistake!

I have to do a suppository but no one has said anything about foods I can eat. Can you call and ask your doctor?

If its bowel prep stuff, its usually clear fluids only like clear chicken soup, jelly etc but appearantly it cant be anything with red or purple food dye and u can have tea or coffee but without milk, and dont forget 2 drink HEAPS of water as it can dehydrate u.

But if the paper doesnt say anything u may be ok.....if ur concerned about it just double check with ir doc.

I've never heard of a regular diet (beyond breakfast) with a bowel prep, although who knows, Drs do have different instructions. I'd call and confirm. They do cancel surgeries for not following the diet, so you'll need to be sure. It seems as if they'd say if it was a special diet, but call to be sure they didn't forget to give you a page that said that. Good luck.

Thanks all. I did call and confirm clear liquid diet as I figured. Have taken all the prep mess and just letting it do its stuff now. Oh joy!
