I noticed on the stats board that there are only a couple of sisters who have had a hyster at a "mature age". I was 58 when I had mine (60 a week ago!!) and have had a million complications since. I admit I was grossly overweight too, but have lost 4.5 stone (63 lb/30kgs) and feel and look much better for having done so. My Dr. says age had nothing to do with the complications nor did my weight, but I am wondering if age had anything to do with the emotional upheaval I felt.
In summary:
2003 LAVH, 8 weeks later in
2004 A & P prolapse and very bad adhesions, followed by 5 months of Diflucan because of error with ABs by GP. (not suing - why? because he can afford a barrister and I can't, AND for what it would cost me, the benefit wouldn't be worth it, and I would have to relive the whole thing again, and I don't want to!)
2005 (Jan) adhesions again and TVT. Bowels are not happy campers just yet, but improving.
I am curious about:
Periods stopped in 1994 so I assumed I went through menopause - sailed through that, no symptoms.
After A & P rep. GYNO (not the one who did the hyster.) put me on a Estradiol implant and says I need them for the rest of my life - why? He said to keep me "well".
I get teary just like anyone in menopause might and have done so for over a year - why? (so much trauma yes, but...............), there isn't such a thing as a second menopause is there?
Any ladies shed any light on this please? Many thanks.

Hi,
Sorry you are still not feeling good. I had my surgery at 53 almost 54 and was having periods and hot flashes at the same time before hyst.
After hyst they got worse and I got weepy and sad. When I was given the right dose of estrogen I was fine.
It sometimes take a lot of trys to find what is the best hrt for a person. There is no magic combination that works for all of us. Some of us may need hrt well into our 60's. My mother in law had hot flashes something awful after her 60's.
Hang in there and don't give up trying to find what works best for you. There are a lot of things for women now .
You might want to check out the Hormone Jungle forum and see what others are doing about their hrt concerns.
Some women take anti-depressants and this also can help hot flashes and moods.
Sending s your way.

Hi pakline,
I'm also older 56 now, had my surgery 4 months ago. Sounds like you've been through alot. I don't have answers for you, but I want to encourage you to go further. We have the Hormone Jungle on this site (go back to home page for contents), filled with ladies who are trying to live with and without hormones. Also, do some research on line about your implant. Perhaps you need something stronger, or nothing at all. Maybe removing the thing would be best.
On the other hand, explore your sad times. Start a journal and write down the date, time and the thought that made you tear up. When we get older and realize that there is no magic cream or pill that will help us look or feel younger...that the life we dreamed of is not going to happen...all sorts of sad feelings can overwhelm us. If you can do just a short journal perhaps you can see what is triggering your tears. I'm pretty sure my sad times are all about me watching both parents fail and pass and knowing I'm next. It's the "life is getting shorter and I haven't lived yet," feeling.
You have been through alot, so give yourself a break. Do a little research and more reading here and find a really good GP. Keep posting and remember, you're not alone. There are tons of us older ladies who have this surgery. You just happened to post on a very busy weekend.
Hang in there,
Maralyn

I too am over 50 and had stopped having periods for over a year.
Within 2+ years, MD did a biopsy, D&C and hysteroscopy, and the the TAH/BSO for post-menopausal bleeding. Bleeding would come with no pattern and each time last a little longer. (3+weeks the last time till she put me on med to stop) It can be a rough road to be dealing with hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and heavy bleeding. Take care and pamper. Your body has been through a lot.

Thankyou to the ladies who replied to me.........I appreciate your input. This last couple of days I have felt much better thankyou.
I think the ERT is OK, I really think it's just me - or at least the emotional/mental aftermath of the trauma of the last 16 months. I do take an anti-depresant when and as needed on instructions from the gyno - he has been fanatastic. Yes, I am finding a new GP too. I guess I am a bit scared of something else going wrong, so therefore the problem is phsycological not physical (albeit the bowels are still a bit "how do you do") ; but I must look forward, be positive, trust in God (which I do) and move on, enjoy my DH, 2 DC, 7 G/children and "live" in general. Thankfully I'm not in any pain - a few sore spots but no pain - that was a killer! Thanks again.
